| Freak369's Full Review: Hasbro Interactive Krawk Island Pocket Neopet |
Its no secret that I am a Neopet addict. In fact, Ive even managed to get a few fellow Epinion members hooked on the site [Ill mention no names, they know who they are]. Theres something exciting about logging into the site, hitting the bank to collect your interest and seeing whats in your shop till; you never know what the next hot item is going to be so if you are like me, you buy a lot of stuff and wait for the prices to rise. Most of that happens when there is a new avatar released, I made a killing when the bread one was put out. People were buying bread like there was no tomorrow and I was there to reap the rewards of being a pack rat mamma. The Hasbro Interactive games are junior versions of the deluxe hand held game which are junior versions of the Neopet website. They are a great way to get a Neofix when you cant get to the site or to try to collect the game trophies to get those Rare Item Codes.
These hand held interactive games are great for kids but I know a couple of adults that are hooked on them. They come in a hard plastic case that helps to protect the game environment and each of them has a cute figure that is used to activate different parts of the game. The object is to try to get as much NP [neopoints] from the games as possible but at the same time, trying to get the highest score possible so you can get the trophy and be one step closer to the Rare Item Code prize. This doesnt take long to set up and get playing, the hardest thing about this game is trying to find it. Tiger and Hasbro have elected to pull this out of production and replace it with the visually enhanced deluxe versions. These have the same sized screens and dodgy graphics but come with there figures, better games [in some cases they are better] and more things to do with your pets.
Hasbro Neopets Interactive Krawk Island Game
Krawk Island. A very mystical place indeed, Ive spent more than my fair share of time there trying to get a Krawk egg and have yet to get one. The Hasbro / Tiger Electronics hand held game is a nice way to take your Neopet fun with you when you cant play at the website or just feel the need to play Scorchy Slots or Negg Drop. The game gives you the ability to create your very own Krawk, choose its sex and name, pick their likes and dislikes, how they greet other Neopets and basic things like the date and time. Using the Krawk figure that comes with the game you activate ports on the island to play games, shop for food, increase their intelligence level and more. It is a cute game for younger kids and adult addicts of the site might like to have this if they are into collecting Neo related items. For the most part this is the same type of set up that is featured in the Mutant Kacheek game, both of which are a step down from the Deluxe Meridell and Faerieland versions.
Icons
Much like the Neopet website, there are a lot of things to do with the Krawk Island Game; you will want to make sure that you are familiar with all the icons that appear on the top and bottom of the screen before you start out with the games and day to day things. Be sure to keep the instructions that come with the game in case you need them. The icons include your pets information [face], health and happiness [book], status [trophy], foods you have collected [ice cream] and stored or inventory items [burlap sack]. The bottom icons are taking your pet to the doctor to receive a cure [box], visiting the shops [shop], checking your NP balance [bank], games [dice] and giving your pet a well deserved break [bed]. Since the screen is a lot smaller than a computer monitor, the icons arent exactly the easiest to become familiar with, if you make a mistake and go into the wrong section, it is very easy to return to the main screen
Games
One of the main goals of the game is to get as much NP [neopoints] as possible, this will allow you to buy more expensive items for your pet and make them happier. The games arent all that elaborate and most of them have daily limits to them; you can get around this by changing the date or time in the set up module but that is a lot of work just to try and get a few more hundred NP. The games on this include Techo Says, Negg Drop, Poogle Race and Scorchy Slots. Scorchy Slots is one of the easiest games to make NP at and as far as I can tell, there is no limit to the number of times you can play. In a way that is true for all the games, you can play them as many times as you want however they wont pay out after you hit a certain point. The instruction booklet that comes with the game gives you all the details of how to play and what the NP pay out is but if you lose it dont worry, the one screen prompts will guide you through the initial stages of the games.
Battery Power
Your game comes with the demo batteries in it and if it isnt one that everyone has been playing around with, you might get a few months of use from them. The downfall of this game is that they require three watch sized batteries [A/76 / LR44] not the usual AA or AAA sized batteries. You only have sixty seconds to replace all three batteries or the memory of the game is erased and you will have to go through the set up stage all over again, and yes, this means you lose all your NP, scores, pet information and items. I am assuming that these batteries were used to save space on the body of the game but to me it means having to spend about two dollars on each battery when they need to be replaced.
Other Features
This is equipped with an automatic shut off feature, if it is inactive for about four minutes it will shut off to save battery power. You can turn it back on at any time by pressing your Krawk figure into any of the ports or pressing any of the buttons. There are several non active ports on the game face, these are there for eye candy and not much more. You can set up the alarm clock to wake you up in the morning or as a reminder to feed your pet, its not that loud so dont count on it to wake you from a deep sleep.
Price
These had a suggested retail price of about $9.99 when they were first released but some places charged upwards of $13.99 for them because, at the time, the Neopet items were hard to come by and in big demand. Now that bigger and better Neopet toys have come out, you can find these in the four to five dollar range, less if you check places like Toys R Us [if they havent all gone out of business by now]. Paying $9.99 for this is a bit of a stretch because unlike the deluxe versions, you only get one figure with the game and it is a junior version meaning that it is a lot easier for younger kids to play with. On a side note, this doesnt come with a rare item code [redeemable for a rare item at the Grundo Space Station]. Some online store and auction sellers are misrepresenting this product saying that it comes with a TCG card or a rare item code card. If you do manage to get the trophies for all the games you will be given a Rare Item Code that can be redeemed at the site however you dont get a card with a code printed on it.
The Bottom Line
If you can find this for a couple of dollars it is well worth getting even if you only play with it a few times. This was first released in 2003 so most larger stores will have already gotten rid of their back stock to make way for the newer interactive figures, plushies and deluxe hand held games. I always wanted to have a Krawk as a pet at the website but I have yet to get one so picking up this game was more of a creature comfort than anything else. The games are relatively easy to learn and play, you have a lot of options when creating your pet and, while the volume isnt adjustable, it isnt extremely loud. You can turn the sound off if you wish but it really takes a lot away from the game if you do. This is recommended for children ages three and older because of the possibility of a choking hazard from the Krawk. Remember to feed your pet often, if you fail to play with it or feed it for fourteen days it will leave. Youll have to start all over again from the beginning but if you have managed to get all the trophies, you will be able to play with your pet but certain parts of the game play will be off limits until his happiness level goes back to normal.
As always, thanks for the read!
