Fade in:(announcer): On today's episode of The Old Game Revue, we have a guy here known to people as Stonefish9, who decided to review the CD-ROM version of that good old Milton Bradley classic known as Stratego. So here he is, it's Mr. Stonefish! Take it away, fish!
(applause from the audience)
Stonefish: Thanks! Now let's get down to business:
One of my favorite games since I was a kid was the Milton Bradley game known as Stratego. I had played chess, Risk, and other War-related games, but I always loved this game. To me, it was the kids game of "Capture The Flag" with a twist.
Now the game is available as a CD-ROM game thanks to Hasbro (which bought Milton Bradley several years ago). They include everything that you have in the original board game, but you have a little bit more too. Now it's time for a little Q and A for the audience.
1. What is the game concept? Well, the game takes place on a battlefield during the time of a war. You have to capture your enemies flag in order to win the game. However, you have players that rank in number. The higher the number, the more you can capture the opponents men. For instance, number 1 is the Marshall He can capture any piece except the spy. Then of course, there are the bombs, which can take out any piece except piece number 3, which is the miner who defuses the bombs.
2. How many pieces are there in the game, and what colors are they? Well, there are 40 pieces in the game. You have one spy, one Marshall, one flag, and one general, while you have multiple majors, colonels, sergeants, bombers, lieutenants and scouts. The colors for one army are red, while the other is blue.
3. What does the board game look like? Like a board game in checkers or chess, with 10x10 squares on each side of the board. The only difference is that you have a field scene on the board.
4. How many players can you have on this one as opposed to the standard board game? You can have two, but you can go up to four if memory serves me well.
5. Can you play the game online? Yes you can, but you have to register your game with www.Hasbro.com, and you can play with numerous players if you play online. And yes, I've done it too.
6. What's the difference between the board game and the CD-ROM? Well, it's basically the same except a few things: first, you have an opening of two warlords in a tent during a thunderstorm playing the game. Second, there's excellent animated graphics with superb sound effects. Third, when you capture your opponent's pieces, there's a cemetery scene which depicts the captured pieces. If it stays there long enough, you'll see a laughing grim reaper.
7. If you capture a piece with the same number, what happens? Both pieces are out of the game, so there!
8. Can you set up your army anyway you want, and how do you do yours?
Well, you can set it up anyway you want, and I ain't telling you how I do mine. I gotta keep my skills and strategy clandestine, you know?
9.What are the detailed graphics of the interactive board game, and how good are the sound effects that are there while you are playing it (if there are any at all)?
Well, to answer your question, the graphics have a considerable amount of detail. First, you see the board decked out like a treasure map with rivers, soil, trees, rivers, and streams. Second, you have all your pieces, including the general, marshalls, bombers, spy, or scouts on the board, all moving around. For instance, If a bomber is captured by a lieutenant, you might see the lieutenant decapitate him or the bomber will just surrender.
To answer your second question, the sounds are quite authentic. You do hear sounds of nature throughout the game (birds, air, etc.). Also, when you move any piece, you'll hear them walking as if you were on the battlefield that day. Another instance, if a scout were to hit a bomb, you would hear and see an explosion like you would if you struck a live land mine. So yes, the graphics and sounds do live up to scratch.
So there you have it folks,Stratego is done in CD-ROM form, and as far as I'm concerned, it's much better than the board game version. Hasbro/MB definitely took pride in making the CD-ROM look good and play good.
