pitfaltina's Full Review: Hasbro Littlest Pet Shop Portable Pets Seahorse Fi...
The Easter Bunny dropped this off at our place last spring after consuming twelve pounds of carrots. If he keeps eating like that, his hop will soon be more of a waddle!
The seahorse was instantly at the head of my daughter's wish list once she saw it, because she must possess all the "unique" pets. I do wonder, though, who keeps a seahorse as a pet? Why doesn't Hasbro make a more conventional pet, like, say, a snake? Their pets are getting more and more out there. I understand that they are now peddling a penguin pet toy. Yes, because we all keep penguins on ice in the bath tub, right? (Insert eye-roll here.)
The set consists of a seahorse, a tank, and a can of pretend food. The seahorse, who has been gifted with the moniker of "Neigh", (Because he's a seaHORSE, get it? Why, yes, I am aware that my daughter picks terrible names!), stands two inches high and has a bobblehead. A magnet is embedded an eighth of an inch up the seahorse bottom. Don't worry, parents, LPS toys never lose magnets! The seahorse is light peach which is ruddy impossible to keep clean, so I've given up trying. The seahorse has blue horns and fins, purple scales down its back, and a purple, periwinkle, and turquoise belly. In addition, the seahorse has white pearly paint up its tail.
The reason that the magnet on this toy is embedded is to help the seahorse sit in her tank. The tank is thick clear plastic with blue and purple trim and yellow "sand" on the bottom. In the center of the tank is a clear plastic peg that juts upward. The peg fits inside the seahorse bottom and the magnet holds it in place. It works very well, holding the seahorse quite steady. My daughter is often too impatient to place the seahorse exactly on the post and just tosses her inside the tank.
The pretend food is a tiny pink hunk of plastic that has no play value in itself. My daughter pretends to feed the seahorse about once a month, and then the food gets kicked under the couch until the seahorse needs its next feeding. I'm surprised the poor thing hasn't starved to death!
Overall, this is a cute, well-designed toy that gets a lot of play and was worth the $4.00 we paid. "Neigh" likes to sit in the hammock at the Biggest Littlest Pet Shop and has even been known to take up residence at the Twirlaround Treehouse. Now, of course, Hasbro has begun marketing other seahorses, so "Neigh" MUST have friends, because MOM, SHE'S THE ONLY SEAHORSE IN THE HOUSE AND SHE'S LONELY! Man, I hate those "unique" pets. Curse you and your marketing team, Hasbro!
