| pitfaltina's Full Review: Littlest Pet Shop: Teeniest Tiniest Pet Shop On Th... |
The Easter Bunny stuck this toy in my daughter's Easter basket last spring because the Easter Bunny is a shameless self-promoter and wanted to proclaim the importance of rabbits on that very special day. Naw, actually, my daughter just wanted the set so she could have baby bunnies for her Littlest Pet Shop rabbits. Something along those lines.
The Teeniest Tiniest bunny set is a giant pain in the rear to liberate from the packaging. It comes packaged in a big, very hard plastic clamshell that you literally have to cut open with a knife. Since the surface of the clamshell is rounded, you are far more likely to cut open a vein if you slip with the knife. Hey, Hasbro? How about safer packaging for these toys!
Once you gouge open the clamshell, you have to pry all the tiny accessories off the inner plastic clamshell. They are stuck down with the stickiest, hardest-to-peel cellophane tape ever invented. And there are LOTS of tiny accessories to peel off.
The playset is a small box with a sunflower yellow base and an aqua lid. The lid features three clear plastic bubbles through which the tiny bunnies can be seen. The front of the box has a yellow button with a tangerine paw print. When you push the paw print button, the lid pops open and three play surfaces unfold to become one big playing surface. When the lid is closed, the play surfaces fold up simultaneously. The playing surface will not lie flat if the hook on the handle is in the way, so be sure to turn it until your playing surface is flat. The playing surface has six sections as follows:
Left back: a removable clear pink plastic storage box with a lid that can be removed, molded plastic plants and paving stones, a molded post on the floor to hold the storage box
Left front: a planting box with three holes and molded flowers and plant food, a hole in the floor where you can place a pet, molded plastic flowers and paving stones
Center back: a plastic airplane ride that actually wiggles forward and back with a hole in the seat where you can place a pet, a swing that actually swings with a hole in the seat where you can place a pet, molded plastic playground perimeter
Center front: molded plastic paving stones and flowers, a hole in the floor where you can place a pet
Right back: molded plastic chair with a hole in the seat where you can place a pet, removable storage box that swings open like a cabinet, hook in floor to hold storage box
Right front: molded plastic carrot with a hole in the middle where you can place a pet
The lid of the box has a decal of a bunny playroom and a latch that you pull down. When you pull down the latch, you gain access to the clear plastic bubbles where the bunnies get stored.
The set comes with some very small, remarkably easy to lose accessories. You get two tiny carrots, a bunny hat, and a flower with a band on the back. The tiny carrots are molded from orange plastic and fit into the holes in the planter's box. Yes, I know, two carrots and three holes. I panicked, thinking I had mistakenly thrown away a carrot when I was disposing of the odious packaging. Nope, they only give you two carrots. How much would a third carrot have added to the cost of manufacture, seriously? The bunny hat is made of hollow molded plastic and can fit over the entire head of the bunny with the gray ears. The flower is made from molded plastic and has a band on the back so you can slip it over a bunny's ear. It is unbelievably tiny and I think we lost that in the first week of ownership. It has traveled to the land of Neverseenagain, the same fabled land where Polly Pocket shoes and Barbie jewelry go to rest.
The accessories are very cute, but very easy to lose. There is also another problem with them. If they aren't stored in one of the two storage boxes, they can slip below the playing surface and will jam the mechanism that opens and closes the box. You will then spend a frustrating half hour with an eyeglass screwdriver prying a tiny carrot out of the crack where it got stuck. Be smart, use those storage boxes for storage!
You get three miniature bunny figurines with this set. One bunny has a white body, a brown head, and a pink plastic molded bow between her ears. Another bunny has a brown body and head and a curl of tan fur between his ears. The last bunny is white with gray patches. All three bunnies are just figurines and have no moving parts. All three stand 1 centimeter high and have clear plastic bases that fit into the holes on the playing surface. My daughter sometimes finds it hard to stick those bases into the holes because they are a very tight fit.
This toy was purchased for $10. I think $7 is a more reasonable price, given that on any given day at least half of the tiny accessories are missing. The toy is a hit, though. On play dates, the teeny tiny bunnies are always dragged out. They also make the trip to Grandma's house with satisfying frequency. This is a very portable toy if you don't mind losing pieces forever!
