When I mention that I am a huge fan of the Neopets website most people look at me like I am insane. Well, theres no documentation to say that I am indeed insane but I will admit that I do have a crazy side. My brood have all been fans of the site for a while and they subsequently got me hooked on it. You can go there and play games, adopt a Neopet, hit the shops, bid on things in the auctions or collect avatars - and thats just the beginning. You can do Faerie Quests, open a shop and sell your wares, fight in the Battledome and more. All this and its completely free. Sure you might have to deal with some on site advertising but its still free [although they do offer a premium service that gives you a few perks]. I started out at the site and got addicted quick; then the brood wanted to get some of the Hasbro Deluxe World Games to play with and see if the mini games that came with it were any good. Some are extremely fun but others are frustrating. If you get a good score youll be given a trophy and a code that you can enter at the site [rare item code], these are a lot like the things that you get when you redeem the codes from the Neopet plush animals that come in the McDonalds Kids Meals [a limited time offer folks so get them while you can!].
Hasbro Neopets Deluxe World: Faerie Land Game
If youve never seen these handheld games they are pretty sweet. It looks like a huge egg but its not completely round - like its been squished a little. The top and bottom sections of the case open to reveal a mock up of Faerieland from the Neopets online site. This comes with three mini figures that are used to press into the pods on the game to activate the games and functions. Since I already had a few of these handheld games when I picked up the Faerie version I knew exactly what to do to set up the time and start the ball rolling but if this is your first one you will have to sit down and read the instructions so you will know exactly what you have to do and what some of the sounds are that the game makes. This isnt as detailed as the website and it is limited to buying food for your pet, collecting things, playing the games and so forth but it is a lot of fun if you are addicted to the site and want to get your hands on one of the rare item codes. These can be redeemed at the site in the Grundo Warehouse or you can enter rare item code in the search engine to take you there. If you have any problems redeeming a code just email them or use the onsite form and they will email you a new code. Since some of these games are older they might have codes that have been removed from the system and wont be recognized. Rest assured, when ever I have had a problem with them or redeeming them, customer service has always helped me out.
The three mini figures that come with the game are a Uni, a Poogle and a Shoryu; these are used to activate the games and things that you do with your pocket version of Faerieland. There is a small three sectioned area on the side of the handheld where these get stored and it has its own lid so you can keep the figures tucked away when not in use. This game is so cool it even has The Wheel of Excitement that you can spin every two hours [it costs 100 NP to play]; you can get Neopoints or mystery prizes but you can also get zapped and lose items you are carrying - just like the version at the website. Once you go through the initial set up, pick your preferences and set the time you are ready to start playing. You will have to give your Neopet a name and start collecting things to make it happy. Pets have a bedtime of nine p.m. and if you tuck them in later than that they could get a little sad, same thing if you try to wake them up before seven in the morning. These things are done by choosing the bed option on the menu. Other icons include trophies, food, Neopet image, games, shopping, burlap sack [that you carry things around in] and the hospital.
Games
I already mentioned The Wheel of Excitement which is a nice treat for you and your pet but theres also Fiery Faerie Chicken. This is a maze that you have to guide yourself through and along the way you collect coins that are then converted to NP and added to your bank. This is a trophy game so when you beat the hardest level on all of the games you get a rare item code that you redeem at the site. Poogle Cloud Bounce is pretty fun and requires you to bounce from cloud to cloud; you get points for the amount of time you are on the clouds and you can pick up bonus points by snagging the gems. Maths Nightmare and its a smaller version of the game that appears at the website. You get 10 NP for each correctly answered problem. Cirrus Drop is a little like Tetris; you have to arrange things in a certain order to get points. I dont really play this game all that often because, well, Im not very good at it. Harris Reflection is the hardest game because it requires that you use a lot of different buttons to hit the balls, catch them, move around and motivate through the game. If you want to get that rare item code you will have to beat this game. With the exception of the Wheel of Excitement all the games listed are trophy games meaning that you have to beat them to get the code. You dont have to get an extremely high score - just complete the hardest level and you get the code.
Price
These sold for a pretty penny when they were first released but the price dropped quickly when people didnt buy them. I chalk a lot of this up to the small screen, basic graphics and limited amount of things that you can do with it. I picked this up for five dollars at a local toy store and it was brand new, mint, still in the package. This seems to be the going price at retail stores but if you look for this online chances are its going to be more because Neopet items are pretty hot these days thanks to the McDonalds Neopet promotion and expansion of the site and the much anticipated The Darkest Faerie Playstation 2 game. If you can find this for five to eight dollars it is a great deal; you get a few trading cards with it, the mini figures and the games plus its nice for little girls to take with them and play around with if they are into the website.
The Bottom Line
If you are a fan of the site and love Faerieland then this is one of the handhelds that you might want to pick up. I hate to say that this is just for girls but not many boys would be into the whole faerie theme or at the very least, most of them wouldnt be caught dead playing with it in public. The mini games are good but you are dealing with a small playing area so you arent getting groundbreaking technology, its a black and white screen with basic sounds but its still fun to play around with. A lot of people collect these just to get the figures that come with them, some just like the idea of having a pocket version of the web based game and if you checked the prices for these at the Neopet site [the virtual version of this not the actual product] they fetch a pretty penny or rather a Neopoint [the currency used at the site to purchase virtual items]. The game has a lot of the same options and tasks as the website and if you dont take care of your pet, it will let you know. If you dont interact with it for two weeks [fourteen days] it will pack up and leave and you will have to start over.
As always, thanks for the read!
