Pros:Can be used to build and for pretend play.
Cons:Barn door pops open in storage, faces are already made
The Bottom Line: Fun entertainment for a 2 or 3-year-old's ability and interest.
Isn't this thing the same ol' potato head repacked? Yes and No. The pieces resemble traditional potato head parts and are inserted the same way. The potato bodies are smaller and they've added some animal faces(a pig and a cow) that are cute actually, not wacky. The fun in the traditional potato head was making the faces wacky. I guess you can still make them wacky by mutating the animals with the people. Also instead of building the face one piece at a time the face is already outlined for you. The face is one piece -- eyes, nose, and mouth. The hat has the ears included in one piece. They added a carrot in the potato role which I thought was neat. I see less emphasis on the imagination because everything is already laid out for you. I think the plan is to build your own characters for pretend play using the farm as the scene.

The age for this toy is 2 and up. If your child is interested in sticking things into the VCR and the toilet and everywhere else that things don't go they'd probably be interested in sticking arm and feet on the wrong parts of little potatoes. This is a toy that my toddler is able to play with independently and then can pick up when she is done. I don't think older kids would be as impressed with it. My 5 year old won't even touch it. It is suitable for either a boy or a girl as the parts make both gender spuds.
These are made of heavy plastic and can be easily wiped off if needed. They are durable and scratching and bending should not be an issue. The pieces are small but weird shaped so the child won't want to put them in their mouth and sure won't be able to swallow anything from there. I don't see any pieces that could break off.
The presentation of this box is excellent. When the box is sitting on a shelf the child is able to immediately identify what is in it and point to it to let you know they want to play with it. If your really courageous you can let the toddler have it floating around their room but like most games once a couple pieces are lost the whole game is ruined. The potato pieces come in a bright red plastic carrying case with handle in the shape of a barn. The barn can stand upright and wide open for play or can be used as a travel case for storing the parts when not in use. The barn has stickers on the inside so the case can be used as a prop for pretend play. The barn door can dual as a door for the animals to walk through or use it to get pieces out one at a time. I am disgusted with the barn door, it's always popping open. I have picked these up more times than I can count because I bump one of the entry points and all the pieces fall out all over the place. A different type of closure would be beter. It is also bulk so may be difficult to store depending on your storage system.
This is 25 pieces in the kit which includes:
- 1 red barn / carrying case
- 2 potato bodies
- 1 carrot body
- 1 carrot top
- 4 hats (ears attached)
- 4 faces (pig and cow)
- 2 animal faces
- 2 animal bodies
- 6 arms, some holding things
- 2 pairs of shoes
How do you put these things together? I'll have to have one of the kids show me because it doesn't make any sense to me. Luckily kids have a better imagination than I do but I can't find many combinations. My daughter started playing with Potato Heads when she turned one. They were a big hit so I figured the next bag of potatoes would be a hit too. WRONG-O. Overall the farm spuds are fun, just not different enough from the traditional potato for my daughter to get excited about them. I'm going to wait a little while longer and if she doesn't show interest in this toy I'm going to make potato soup with the pieces by mixing the potato head sets together to give more options and so that they are played with more.
I got this for the fair price of $8.00 on sale with free shipping through Amazon (www.amazon.com). I've seen them at Target for $15.00. I think the product is definitely worth the money and would even consider giving this as a gift because it's packaged so nicely and you just can't go wrong with a classic toy like this.
