| danielsaddress's Full Review: Scategories Board Game |
This is my most recent purchase for a board game. I played the game at my Wife's Grandparents house and had such a good time playing it that I decided I should buy the game myself. We have since played at least 10 times and had fun each time.
Gameplay: The gameplay is very simple but surprisingly fun. Each player or team (You can play in teams if the group gets too big) gets a folder and sets it to the same card. A team member rolls the die and gets a certain letter picked. Then, with a timer going, each player or team must try to think of a word that begins with the letter for each of the given categories. For instance, if the die rolls a "t" then for a song you could put "Three Blind Mice". You put a single word or phrase for each of the 12 categories (or leave blank if you cannot think of anything) Words with multiple words starting with the letter count for extra points, for instance "Rudolph The Red nosed Reindeer" counts for 3 points for the letter R. Once the timer goes off each player must stop and then the answers are read to everyone. If two players or teams have the same word or phrase then they both do not count for a point. This makes the game interesting as you have to try to think of words that your opponents won't think of. This goes on for three rounds, or three letters for the same 12 categories, and then each player or team counts up their points. The team with the most points wins.
This may seem very simple, and it is, but perhaps the simple nature is what makes it so fun. Anyone can play and have a good shot at competing, even younger players find themselves thinking of good words to compete with. While a younger player may rarely beat an older player, teaming up makes everyone feel like they're important. Teams work very simply; both people together to think of words and must come to a decision for each category as you can have only one word per category.
The game takes approximately 20 minutes to play, so generally you play 2-4 games per session before retiring. There are 16 different category cards, so you can play a decent amount before repeats. Repeats are still fun however as you get new letters and still have to think of new things each time. Additionally, custom categories can be made that are more specific to the group of people. For instance, plumbers could put "pipe fittings" while that would be a horrible category for most players.
I highly recommend this game as it is a good bargain for the money and will keep you and a group entertained for quite some time. The game is mostly skill so it feels really good to win. The categories are clean and children can definitely play along. I will definably play this game again in the near future.
