Palpatine (not to be confused with the figures Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, or Emperor Palpatine) is a central figure to the entire Star Wars saga. I imagine that in Revenge of the Sith he will see still more action. Palpatine enters the story as a Senator, gets elected as Supreme Chancellor, gets emergency dictator powers, and finally becomes Emperor.
Comparatively speaking, Palpatine is a very nice figure. Palpatine is figure number 35 and a member of the collection number 1 in the Revenge of the Sith series. I had a hard time finding Palpatine (number 35 that is, there are scads of the others) and choose to leave him safely in his package. Palpatine is not recommended for children under the age of four because the small pieces can be a choking hazard. As far as the durability of this series of figures, well I don't open them. But I did open some from Episode I and I can tell you from past experience that the small weapons and accessories will get lost. As a boy I tried so hard to keep track of them and just failed. Slowly but surely the guns and lightsabers disappeared. By and large the figures are durable. The heads can be popped off by abuse or a determined push (for those with heads that rotate), and the hands can be chewed until they no longer function. That is my best guess as to how well this series will hold up.
As a basic figure Palpatine is 3.75 inches tall. This particular figure seems to provide a lot of bang for the buck. For one, he has a special action move. If you push down on the figure it activates a lightsaber attack. Several of the figures have that feature, but his one also has an interchangeable head and hands. As Supreme Chancellor, Palpatine is a diplomat and his features are healthy looking and normal. When he uses his dark side powers Palpatine's looks change into that of a Sith Lord. He becomes pale, gaunt, wrinkly and nasty looking. The figure as it comes in the box, is set up to look like the Chancellor. It closely matches the photo on the front. The face is very accurately recreated down to the folds of the actors skin. Turn the box over to the back and you are treated to a photo of him as a Sith Lord, as well as a photo of the figure converted to match. Again I congratulate Hasbro on a fine job. The creepy visage from the photo is accurately reproduced. Palpatine is wearing maroon robes made from molded plastic. He has joint at the shoulders, elbows and wrists. My figure came with a blue lightsaber, but the photo of the figure on the package shows a red lightsaber. I thought he had a red lightsaber in the episode III trailer as well, so I guess mine is a mistake. Additionally Palpatine comes with little pieces of force lightening to hold in his hands. I think they made a mistake when they decided to sell this as a basic figure. This one got the deluxe treatment.

I can't wait to see that.
This figure may seem a little ho hum in the sense that there are several Palpatine figures. This one is great. I recommend you get #35 before any of the other Palpatine figures. So far, it is probably my favorite figure of all.
