| Lisa_J's Full Review: Hasbro: Taboo Board Game |
We often get together with friends, during which game nights are popular. Hasbro Taboo Game is one of the many games that we enjoy. This is a team type of game, one that we often put women against men. As indicative by the game title, there are Taboo words, yet with this game you really want the opposing team to say as TABOO words... the more the better!
FACTS
Hasbro Taboo Game (a Milton Bradley Game) is intended for 4 or More Players and Recommended for ages 12 to Adult. This set includes 504 cards, a card holder, label for the card holder, buzzer, timer and a score-pad. The buzzer requires 2-AA batteries, not included.
OBJECT
The object of the Hasbro Taboo Game is to "score the most points by guessing the most words" as the clue-giver works with a card that provides a Guess Word and Taboo Words, presenting it to his/her team. Each card has one guess word and five taboo words; every guess word is worth one-point.
LETS PLAY!
Initial game setup is simple
-put rubber feet and a label onto the card holder
-place batteries into the buzzer
-make sure the cards are properly faced (they have a red side and blue side)
-place a stack of cards into the card holder
After the initial game set up you will split your group of players into two teams. As mentioned, we usually prefer to team women against men. Each team will select their first clue-giver (every player will take a turn as clue-giver). Team A's clue-giver selects a card from the card-holder and places it onto the easel portion of the holder. Team B's players sit so that they can control the buzzer, timer, and view the card that Team A's clue-giver is working off of. Team A's clue-giver provides clues to his/her team, attempting to be careful to not mention the TABOO words. If he/she mentions a TABOO word, a member from Team B presses the buzzer, thus meaning that card is set aside, Team B receives one point. The clue-giver can pass and not play cards, but the opposing team gains a point for each pass. The clue-giver continues presenting cards for the length of the timer and then the opposite team takes a turn... and so on.
Instructions state that after every player has had a turn as clue-giver (rather each team has had equal turns), points are tallied and a winning team declared. Naturally you can alter this to fit your time constraints/needs. We usually have six or more players and the game time varies, generally 30 - 60 minutes.
Card Example:
Guess Word: Toddler
Taboo Words: Child, Youngster, Baby, Walk, Two
In attempting to have your team guess the word Toddler, you might tell them... not yet a preschooler...
But you cannot say young, 24 months, rhymes with ___, etc.
A nice attribute of this game is that, although you must have a minimum of four players, you can have an odd number of players (each team just needs to have equal turns). Another nice feature is that the game, in my opinion/experience, is mostly simple to play and not intimidating. Unlike Scrabble or Pictionary, which are usually objected to by someone in attendance, this game is enjoyed by persons of various personalities.
This is a good party game, even an 'ice-breaker', because it brings participants together. As the clue-giver works toward having his/her team say the secret word, the opposing team is watching over the clue-giver waiting for Taboo words (phrase, or actions), yet the clue-givers team works hard to shout out the guess word. Everyone is involved! At the same time, because this is a team game, we find it works well for parents that have to tend to little ones needs (while one person takes care of kid issues, the rest of the team might select to continue play).
As indicative, I recommend TABOO!
Happy Playing!
