Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
That’s one of the best lines delivered by Colonel Wolfburger in Zombie’s new film about… well pretty much in typical Rob Zombie film in The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Sleazy is boarding this strange world.
-The Sizzle- Yes, I eagerly waited for the film to be released when it came about in the future. I am Rob Zombie fan through the music and movies he makes. Zombie said in an interview on Jimmy Kimmel's show back in 2007 about this film. I was won over by then as Mr. Zombie sold the sizzle to the stake, the sizzle? The film came around 2 years later on DVD rather than a theatrical release which I questioned. My questions were answered and understood why at least in my perspective mind.
-Growing Up- I knew this was going to be a pretty decent and gnarly flick since Zombie has stated the cartoon as dirty cartoon. I assumed he was given the chance to express himself with freedom over the cartoon’s content and story. I could not have been more excited as I saw it a relief. A lot of cartoon I have seen recently, with notable exceptions, are lame, horrendous, preachy, and generic. There are not a lot feature length animation films since computer generated animation is the way of the future. The most notable is the prestigious Pixar with its wonderful films. The films that I have seen (due to siblings in some cases) that are feature length are Rugrats All Grown Up (F), Space Jam (A-), The Simpsons Movie (A), and Beavis & Butt-Head Do America (A). There were other shows turned into movies although I have forgotten about them. Good thing, I preferred cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tex Avery,Ren & Stimpy, Beavis & Butt-Head, Daria, The Simpsons, South Park, along some others I can’t remember. A number of inferior cartoons began popping out when my family cut the cable, so I didn’t have to see crap. Also, the rise of Anime, I was never a big fan. Heck, I remember students in my school were obsessing and crying over Pokémon while I was trying to all for Friday the 13th Part 2. A film I would love to mash with the previous series I mentioned someday for the folks, but that’s another time. Years pass by and whatever. It is here and rented the flick.
-Expectations- You know a Rob Zombieflick plays out. A number of folks have complained that all movies are filled with sadistic violence along with tanks of blood, gratuitous nudity, and f-bombs. Here, we see it again as it will please Zombie fans. Since this film is billed as a comedy, you should bet the content will be raunchy, offensive, and adolescent. Thank goodness I still have a shred of immaturity inside. We all do on level. Anyways, we expect there is going to be a lot of horror culture involved in the flick as Zombie is sort of a horror expert. He has the right influences, but is yet to make a great film. There is a lack of development halfway through his flicks along with some other problems, but this is not the place to discuss them. I wondered if El Superbeasto would have similar problems.
-Maestro- The film’s opening scene has a black and white feature as a man tells us the film we’re about to see is disturbing and not appropriate for young viewers. He smirks and says we were warned. The title is shown along with credits playing out like a film I once saw called The Devil’s Hand (C). It had reeling with excitement. I thought for a few seconds maybe this could for kids.
We watch Superbeasto making sleazy pornos (scratch that) I mean art films early in the film. There go allowing children to watch it. We quickly learn he is pretty much detestable in a conceited and ego-maniacal personality. Yet, he’s pretty funny too. Afterwards, we watch his daily life with a cool theme song on his route. He pounds booze, nails s***s, and a**holes better watch out. Meanwhile, his sexy/Cyclops sister Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie) and the strange adorable robot Murphy (Brian Poshen) are supporting characters in action when we see them. They kidnap the Fuhrer’s head, They Saved Hitler’s Brain! (C), and are chased by Nazi zombies, led by Col. Hans Wolfburger (Rob Paulsen), throughout the film. As the film closes off the first half, we encounter monsters, serial killers, and everything you can think of from. However, the story doesn’t roll on until we see Paul Giamatti as the villainous Dr. Satan. He complains and moans a lot about his image in the public eye. That is all about change because with the help of the fancy gorilla Otto, Dr. Satan plans to takes over the world with all the sudsy powers of hell. Otto explains it an enchanting number.
Note: there are a lot of cool theme and kooky songs by Hard ‘n Phirm. My favorite and best part of the film is the introduction a foul mouth Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson).
Miss Von Black becomes the target of Dr. Satan as part of the phase to take over the world and is kidnapped while, like most archetypal flicks, it is up to El Superbeasto tries to save her. It’s all in the name of… He teams up with Suzi, so they can track down and recover Von Black while all kinds of trouble come about.
-Lockdown- I have noticed in the past that nearly of Zombie’s films are met with extreme love/hate with little middle ground. Here, it is pretty much clear.
The problem with the flick is the lethargic factor. At first, it starts up pretty nicely with vulgarity and adolescent humor and dialogue that’ll have you popping your eyes, but it loses its power as it occupies most of the film. Not a lot of new stuff comes along the way. There are number funny pop culture related jokes, but there is an expression of bigotry in other jokes. I must admit defeat from the offensive since I’m not much of a political correct fellow. According to IMDB, the flick was written by Zombie and Tom Papa. It’s great and all Mr. Zombie had a co-writer, but he needed a lot more. This flick could have been groundbreaking with a cult status, but that might take a while now. It falls short 80 minutes, heck, not even 77 minutes long which wouldn’t do well in theaters considering the price of movie tickets. There should have been more concentration to the writing to make this a genuine comedy.
I have noticed a lot of folks have mentioned a film known as Fritz the Cat whenever they reviewed this flick. I have not seen it yet, but the trailer is pretty hilarious and genuine. It’s obvious that film is better than El Superbeasto. However, there are not a lot of films like that, so Zombie’s flick is a shoo-in and relief from the number dumb down kiddie cartoons nowadays. Sure, Family Guy, The Boondocks, American Dad, and Robot Chicken are great, but none of them a have feature length film. The last flick I saw before this and The Simpsons Movie was Aqua Teen Hunger Force (C).
Seizing the opportunity, there are a lot of things I love from this flick. To quote (ever loving) Fangoria, “El Superbeasto is weird, wild, and wonderful.” The quality and color of the animation is really beautiful as it is bright and flashy while scummy in other parts. It is playing sleazy, crude, lewd, rude, pornographic, unapologetic, shameless, and funny. Zombie hits right on target in cartoon exploitation as I was wildly entertained. I was delighted with the horror pop culture and characters along cult classic characters. Some of them are from films I have seen like Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) and Otis (Bill Moseley) from Devil’s Rejects (B) to Ken Foree of Dawn of the Dead (+A) and others I have yet to see, Varla (Tura Santana) from the almighty Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! Heck, there’s even a mention about Lord Byron’s tea cup collection and symbolism involving Michael Myers. Can’t remember what it was. The film brings on a number of voice cameos although not huge stars, but recognizable in some aspects. They include: Cassandra Peterson, Danny Trejo, Harland Williams, Dee Bradley Baker, and some others. I love the action the film serves up too. Some of my favorite scenes involve Paulsen as the incompetent Col. Wolfburger. He has a lot of great lines along the action and misfortune he endures with evil troops. Papa as Superbeasto is fantastic with the attitude and cockeyed optimism, but I wish there genuine dialogue and time to Giamatti as Dr. Satan. He is great as cartoon villain, but I wanted a little more. As for the rest of the cast, they are great and funny from annoying Suzi X to the foul mouth Von Black. -Extras- There are not a lot of extras in the DVD of the film. There is 3 or 5minutes of deleted scenes and they're great and all, but it falls a little short.
-Results- The Haunted World of El Superbeasto achieves a lot, but it becomes tiresome overtime and despite the imperfection, it’s still solid enough to be recommended. I wanted a little more intelligence to the flick, but I had a lot of fun. I would say rent the flick.
