We live in a rural area with lots of deer.  I think there has to be some kind of secret sign that deer have which indicate new gardens as being a night club for deer complete with unlimited salad bar.

We have been using Liquid Fence which has worked well over the years, but my husband has a problem with the smell and hates it.  I actually like the smell. 

When we had a chance to try a new product called Havahart Deer-Off with Battery Powered Sprayer, we jumped at the chance because my husband could not stand the smell of the Liquid Fence.

I knew we had to do something quickly because the stinkin deer went all chomp happy all over my swiss chard, chewing it right down to the ground.  I was about ready to get our neighbor's shot gun and blow them away Elmer Fudd style!

WHAT IS HAVAHART DEER OFF WITH BATTERY SPRAYER LIKE?

Havahart Deer-Off With Battery Sprayer is an interesting product.  It comes in a half gallon sized container with a lid on it.  There is a tube the fits in the lid and at the end of this tube is a sprayer top.  There are two batteries that come in it and you install them and are good to go.

The blue plastic container is easy to carry and very easy to operate too. 

This product claims:

Is weather proof
safe for children and pets
all natural- safe for organic gardeners


HOW DOES HAVAHART DEER-OFF WITH BATTERY SPRAYER PERFORM?

Wow, I have to say that this product performed way beyond what I expected.  The sprayer is very easy to use, you simply press the lever and it sprays without you having to pump it repeatedly. 

The sprayer delivers a smooth spray which quickly covers the foliage of the plants easily.  It is amazing how fast it is to use this unit.

The easy way it is designed makes it comfortable to use.  Carry the container on one side and the sprayer in another hand.  The tube is long enough to use comfortably.

As for being effective 90 days I don't think it is.  I would say about two to three weeks depending on the rain, weeds, and growth of the plants.  New plant growth has to be covered because if you pick the produce, the new growth won't be covered and has to be sprayed.

I have found that for three to four weeks (we have had little rain) our plants are protected.  As I have pulled weeds and cut old growth as in chard, the plants need to be recovered. 

For peppers and tomatoes and other plants that do not have produce cut, the protection seems to be good for about five weeks so far.  I have also used this on elderberry bushes which would never grow because of deer damage.  It is growing nicely now.

When picking vegetables- with a good washing, there is no residue of flavor or smell at all.  Also, our cat lives in our garden hunting mice and he has had no problems with this either. 


FINAL COMMENTS

Havahart does not smell like the Liquid Fence does.  My husband loves using it as he does not feel nauseous with the smell.  Havahart seems to work as well as liquid fence does but with easier application and quicker too. 

The label for a container of this says it will cover 1000 feet. We have gardens which are probably 90 square feet.  

You can get this product at garden stores and on amazon.com for around $33 a container.  I can see this container lasting us all summer long and covering garden as well as other plants in the yard including bushes that the deer are merciless with.
