jorn's Full Review: Martin Cruz Smith - Havana Bay: A Novel
I loved "Gorky Park" way back when, but MCS's other works really haven't won my loyalty.
This new one was for me quite a pleasant infotainment (about Cuba in Castro's declining years) up until the last few chapters, when the many, many unanswered questions are hastily sewn up.
A good movie director can probably fix that pacing problem, without tossing out too much of the educational value, so unless you're just bored, you'll probably do well to wait. (If you're bored, and don't expect too much, it's perfectly enjoyable.)
I had the distinct feeling that MCS was designing it for its filmability anyway-- some horror, some suspense, some sex, some dancing. Hollywood must love it, in their generic way.
