| lirubis's Full Review: Havana Club 7 Year Old Aged Rum |
Cuba means a lot of things to me. Beautiful loving women, superb music, deep friendship and one hell of a great rum for all I care. And even more recently, it provided me with the best excuse I´ve had in YEARS to try something else besides tequila. Havana Club 7. WOW!
Tuesday night was memorable for me. I guess it started with the arrival of a good longtime friend that I had not seen for quite a while. He KNOWS rum. He LOVES rum... and HATES tequila. So I guess it was time to open for new experiences. Boy, was I glad I did.
Havana Club 7 years is a delicious rum in many ways. Not just because of its organoleptic features, Havana Club has "something" inside that is well beyond rational and tangible. It is just "there". And you can taste is, you can feel it. And no tequila has this. Who says something new is learned everyday?. Rums are not all the same, as it happens with tequila and all other spirituous beverages. Not even Appleton, Mt.Gay, Matusalén or other well known brands have this misterious ingredient.
For all I care, This aged rum displays a fascinating deep and opaque amber color, with exceptional golden sparkles when hit by direct light. I find it reminiscent of those gorgeous tanned bodies found all over Cuba, those stunning "mulatas" with skin so beautifully toasted with a deep golden brown hue that sunlight merely dances around them...(* sigh *).
Bouquet is just a tad below magnificent. Sweet, carressing elements of rich sugar cane, oak, tofee, vanilla and butter, perfectly balanced with a potent alcoholic presence. Alcohol, while strong, doesnt dominate the other elements, and it is even dislodged in the mid and upper rim inhalations. I noted a much less spicier attitude than other caribbean rums, but its to be noted than cinammon, thyime and chestnut are pretty much in the secondary elements.
I felt confused with the first sips of Havana. It tingles the tip of the tongue much like the top notch aged tequilas I know. Its not shocking, but rather playful. As you get acquainted with this rum, you will begin to feel an utterly sensuous CARESS all over your mouth and tongue. It is creamy, lascivously smooth, warm and tender. Like a kiss from a passionate lover. I never expected possible to experience such a vivid and pleasent experience from a lousy rum. It is wise to chenge your mind...
Now, the flavor concert. So much swetness, tangy from the wood tannins and tropical spices. Butterscotch? You BET. Vanilla? hmmm...more like slighly burnt caramel (not smokey, please!!). You can also taste the feel of those iron-rich soils, a touch of nutmeg, cinammon, anise, argentia and cacao. Very firm flavor structure, where the only reminder you are dealing with a distilled spirit comes from a energic yet civilized ethilic touch in the background. The finish is LOOOONG, very spicy and robust from wood and sugar cane, and once again charcola is present in the retronasal experience (and it makes perfect sense, as sugar canes are toasted before a mill extracts the juices for fermentation...)
Mixer? Superb one. But I´d rather have it straight on a snifter, and as my buddy Pepe told me: just put an ice and a wand of cinammon. Grab those "robustos" and smoke away! I never tought I could get so excited with a spirit, specially rum. But now I think different. This Havana club 7 is beyond good.
Its a sensual encounter with the roots, flavors and smell of primal Cuba. And this is just a piece of heaven. Loved it all the way.
