Eupolis's Full Review: You Don't Know Jack Vol. 4 - The Ride for Windows,...
Ask any of my friends what game I addicted to on the computer above all others, and they will immediately respond "that Jack trivia game." They are right...and Volume 4 in the You Don't Know Jack series is both hilarious and innovative (as far as previous volumes go).
While the Volumes 1 through 3, as well as the expansion and specialty packs (Sports, TV, Movies) volume a standard format that works really well, I found myself looking for added nuances to the game, from volume to volume. YDKJ: The Ride takes this standard format, and flips it on its head. Gone are the "7 or 21 Questions Games." Gone are the random sets of questions. Every time you play, its a new experience.
At the beginning of each game, you are given a "Moral Dilemma" which determines which "floor" you stop in. Indeed, the entire games is built around the idea you are in a large elevator, slowly but interminably descending to some unknown location at the bottom. Each floor, then, is a different theme, with 13 questions varied on the theme, and sometimes with story lines that play themselves out as you progress from question to question...for example, on the "Alcohol" floor, the host becomes more and more intoxicated as the questions progress.
Oh...the hosts! For those who played the older games, all the hosts are here. And if you thought they were mean to the contestants, you should see how they treat each other. Cookie. Buzz. Schmitty. Guy. And, of course Nate (from the first volume) are all back.
Questions and dollar amounts are determined by buzzing in at random and seeing what comes up. You could be playing for $68, ro $10,717. New question types abound, and Screwing Your Neighbor is more deadly than ever.
As a long time fan of the series, this was a welcome refresher. For those who have not played the series, though, I'd recommend building your way up to this...lots of "in" jokes exist, and it makes you appreciate more, what they've done with the game.
Bonus: One of the install CDs has audio tracks which contain many of the YDKJ "commercials" from throughout its history.
