Pros: Protects your lips, easy to carry tube.
We live in a tropical climate. Sun protection is an issue at all times. Even when just walking to the car a store or walking a dog we have to wear protection. I carry Hawaiian Tropic Sunblock Ozone SPort SPF 60+ Lip Balm in my purse. Hubby carries it in his pocket. This way it's always there when we need it. Along with sunscreen for arms and face and neck it's important to protect your lips. We use this on our ears and nose as well. Sometimes I'll apply it to my hands.
Hubby is prone to fever blisters and sun can aggravate this condition, another reason to use the lip balm. This 3" tube is easy to carry and easy to apply. It's just like a chapstick in design. It has no noticable scent and isn't too greasy.
Keep in mind, sunscreen does not block all cancer causing rays. You are not fully protected even when wearing sunscreen. It's important to reapply many times. Areas like lips and ears as well as nose often get overlooked when using sunblocks and sunscreens. You should also avoid the sun from 10 am to 5 pm, use an umbrella, wear long sleeves and long pants and a hat preferably wide getting burned. All this applies to skiing, boating as well as the beach activities.
Hawaiian Tropic does in lab testing as well as outdoor testing. They test for at least 5 hours in the mid day sun. They don't put an expiration date on their products but claim they are stable for 3 years. They recommend discarding them after 2 years. UVB rays are the burning rays UVA rays cause long term deep skin damage . IR rays are the invisible, heat rays like a heat lamp. Look for products with protection from all three. Keep in mind you can be exposed to sun in the winter, the snow is very reflective, on boats, golfing or even just walking the dog. Apply and re apply.
When you buy SPF 45 or 60 the lip balm sometimes comes as a bonus, just keep your eyes peeled when shopping. In recent decades, skin cancer increased 50% among women 15 to 39. Ultraviolet rays increase the levels of free radicals and they destroy collagen enzymes. If you really want to know what kind of damage you've gotten from sun exposure, you can have imaging done that will show all the cumulative damage sun has done to your skin.
Look for a sun block with UVA and UVB deflectors as well as Avobenzone, Meradiante, Ecamsule and Oxybenzone. These are the some of the most important chemicals mentioned by dermatologists in describing what's needed in a good sunsblock for proper protection. Hawaiian Tropic Lip Balms are moisturizing and waterproof.
Sunblock can reduce the photo aging and help protect against skin cancer. I wear it under my make up and I use make up with built in sunscreen as well.
