I do recommend this product for treating mild dandruff which is flaking of the scalp due to dryness from the inside out. This means that your natural expulsion of moisture from inside your head is not enough. Your pores are literally screaming for some kind of hydration other than water ! This makes the hair shine but as you get older the shine begins to fade. The outer side of hair is also terribly damaged by the natural elements i.e. wind, sun, smog and the torture we put the strands up to: vigorous brushing, heating, straightening, crimping, rolling, dyeing and finally just washing daily, that something a bit more drastic is required.
All of this torture to the separate strands and hairshafts leads to some sort of dandruff beginning where the roots are, in the scalp, that must be dealt with out of embarrassment or finally just had enough scratching to where there is pain and sometimes blood from where the irritation has been scratched raw. The pyrithione zinc is specifically designed to treat this common condition but honestly I used it too often and found out from a relative who works in the medical field that this zinc product overuse of , is very dangerous.
Yes it works on dandruff because it eventually deadens the hair shaft into being resilient to healthy flaking of the shaft like healthy flaking of the first epithelial layer of skin on our arms, legs, torso etc. We shed skin cells all the time and also flake hair proteins, all the time; but when there is accumulation of oil because the skin type is equally oily or combination-skin (dry in some areas and oily in others), the hair copycats this trait.
That deadening of the hairshaft also becomes less resilient to anything that could infect the head if those sores are constantly left to be scratched raw instead of treated effectively. I found with the 2in1 product I would not have to condition twice. True if you wash all the time, according to the bottle. If you wash your hair with this for three weeks, see a difference in less flaking than before and smoother softer silkier hair then it was effective. You can go back to your regular shampoo and stop the dandruff treatment because you have effectively controlled the excess underbalance of hydration. But with me even after three weeks, the problem did not go away and I found it was not an external problem after all, but an internal.

It states on the bottle to use every time you shampoo--yes but only till problem disappears and has not returned for more than a week; otherwise you risk burning your scalp and having it itch so bad you scratch what feels like sores that have lifted from the scalp and are coagulating. Not a fun feeling and certainly not healthy. But when the problem persists after four weeks, it must be dealt with internally not externally.
I discovered this does relieve scalp itchiness when used according to my best intuition, no longer than the four weeks. I am grateful there is a warning label that states this product is to be used externally only and cannot be ingested; therefore telling me some harsh chemicals are working here to relieve this problem.
I found out quite a bit when I logged onto their website at http://www.headandshoulders.com and went to Proctor and gamble and ran a comapartive analysis on the benefits of using head & shoulders or something else. If after four weeks, I recommend something else but if in two weeks you have the results you desire and your scalp is much=improved, then by all means use the best for a flake-free hair experience !
