Pros: Really conquers Dry Scalp
Cons: Leaves your hair limp, dull, unmanageable
The Bottom Line: If you suffer from an itching scalp (with or without flaking), I would highly recommend trying this product for relief, but not for "looks"

| 4paws's Full Review: Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp |
Approximately four years ago, I was complaining to my long time friend/hairdresser about my scalp itching so much. It was driving me nuts! She told me after years of caring for my hair that it was not Dandruff as I had feared, but simple dry scalp. Her recommendation was Head & Shoulders (Dandruff Shampoo Plus Conditioner) for Dry Scalp, for normal or dry hair. I was surprised, actually, considering the plethora of products she had available to promote.
On Head & Shoulders website:
http://www.headandshoulders.com
they are careful to explain the difference between dandruff and simple dry scalp. Their information states that while dandruff is a chronic skin condition affecting the scalp and is scientifically thought to be caused by a natural fungus (Mallassezia) found on everyone's scalp. It can cause irritation and accelerates the sloughing of dead skin cells. Dry scalp does itch and flake also, but not at the same rate. Also, true dandruff sometimes requires medicated shampoos to truly control.
Also, Head and Shoulders has a fairly substantial marking that the product is FDA approved. If you do happen to do further research on webmd or other sources, you will see that there are several products which have been used in the past for dandruff or dry scalp that contain ingredients which have been banned by the FDA.
WebMD.com's stance on dandruff is practically the same but attributes the malady to a different fungus: "Some people with severe flaking have overactive sebaceous glands (whose task is to lubricate the skin with oils); others have an elevated level of the fungus Pityrosporum ovale, which is present in most people but to excess in dandruff sufferers."
I am including some other information which you can read in detail on WebMD, that help you differentiate between dandruff and simple dry scalp.

What Are the Symptoms?
Flakes of skin that range from small and white to large, greasy, and yellow.
Itchy flaking that appears on the scalp or eyebrows, or around the hairline, ears, or nose.
Call Your Doctor If:
Scaling is greasy and yellow, and does not respond to over-the-counter dandruff shampoos and lotions; you may have seborrheic dermatitis and need more aggressive treatment to relieve the redness, itching, and flaking.
If the over the counter "concoctions" don't work for you, then you need to see a physician.
However, sometimes, itching and flaking can be a simple case of dry scalp. Just like the rest of your skin, your scalp can suffer from the drying effects of beauty products (such as coloring or perming) to simply weather conditions. And what do you do for your arms, legs and hands when they become dry? You moisturize them. So, that seems to be logical for your scalp as well. Just remember to check with your doctor if the itching continues.

The Usual Suspects:

My Personal Experience:
When I began using this product, I got almost instant relief. At least it was not much longer than a week until the itching finally subsided. I did find, however, that after prolonged use, my hair was feeling "not quite clean" and difficult to curl or work with at all. It was a little limp. I am assuming that was from the extra moisturizing of the conditioner. I eventually changed to using it two or three times per week and used a stronger shampoo the rest of the time. This turned out to be the right combination for me. To this day, I may quit using it for several weeks at a time, but eventually will need to use it again for a short while. I find that for the shine and look of my hair, I personally prefer not to use it all the time as my hair begins to look dull.
The unbreakable 33.9 Fluid Ounce bottle that I keep in my shower is enough to last me quite a long while. The shampoo lathers very nicely and has a pleasant smell. I had tried other medicated type shampoos that made me wash my hair more because the odor was very distasteful and lingered. I'd rather smell a little "floral" than like tar.
All in all, I am very pleased with this product and keep it on hand at all times, although I do not use it every time I shampoo. I never look at the price anymore (so remain clueless here), because I have been using it for enough years that I just keep it in stock.
