| biscuitfarmer's Full Review: Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment |
Being that my wife and I have lived in Alaska and spend a lot of time in the area, we have had to deal with some ugly cold weather at times. The only issue that we have with the cold is that it completely drains our skin of any moisture and dries out our scalp as well. This of course, causes issues with dandruff. So, we of course, decided to buy Head and Shoulders, because we knew that it worked. I mean it would have to, since it's so popular. People don't just keep buying a product that doesn't work, for no apparent reason, so it had to work.
Active Ingredient
Selenium Sulfide, which is used for the treatment of dandruff and is an anti-seborrheic dermatitis treatment as well.
Inactive Ingredients
water, ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, glycol distearate, cocamide MEA, fragrance, dimethicone, tricetylmonium chloride, ammonium xylenesulfonate, cetyl alcohol, DMDM hydantoin, sodium choloride, stearyl alcohol, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, FD&C red #4
Fragrance
First of all, I guess you don't really buy a product for dandruff, assuming that it's going to smell great, however, this actually didn't smell all that bad. I found that it smelled a lot like dryer sheets that many of us use in order to keep our clothing smelling fresh. The smell is fairly pleasant, and isn't all that strong, so you definitely DO NOT have to rewash with another shampoo after use of this product.
Usage
The product is mainly created to stop itching and flakes. I have found that the use of the Intensive Treatment is quite a bit more effective in preventing and treating Dermatitis than the other Head and Shoulders varieties. It seems to go a lot deeper in the scalp to treat the problems.
It was easy to apply to my hair, much like any other shampoo and it washed out equally as well. I didn't have any issues with having to wash it out for a longer period of time than I normally would with any other shampoo.
Effectiveness
I found that the product was extremely effective in reducing the amount of flakes that I had. Of course the flaking didn't disappear immediately, but they were pretty much reduced from the beginning. I think I had to use the product everyday for about a week before I really started to see the results. It took about two to three weeks before the dandruff was completely eliminated.
The best thing about the product is that it took only about two uses before all of the itching was gone. This was extremely important to me, because I can really live with flakes if I have to, but the itching is just annoying. So, it did a great job of eliminating the itching quite fast, which made me happier than anything.
Hair
While I assumed that it would leave my hair feeling somewhat oily, that wasn't the case. My hair was left feeling fresh, and better than it did before using Head and Shoulders. I felt that my hair was much more moisturized, and had a somewhat shinier appearance than it did before. This became much more apparent with continued use. In fact as shampoo is concerned, I think it was a far better all around hair shampoo than many of the other products out on the market. My hair was also extremely soft after using the Head and Shoulders, which was truly unexpected.
Final Thoughts
As a shampoo, I have found this product to be one of the best on the market, with the bonus of Dandruff control. I now use it as my all purpose shampoo, and don't just use it when I need to take care of dry scalp, itchy skin, or flaking. It has become a fairly regular used product within our house. I use it at least every other day, and sometimes every day, depending upon my mood and what we have in the house at the time.
The product is more than effective at treating issues related to dry scalp, however, it does take some time if you let it get as bad as I did. I would recommend just using it a few times a week, just for preventative measures if for nothing else. If you do that, you'll have no problems with reoccurances and if you do, just bump up how often you use the product and you shouldn't have issues at all.
