You may be wondering what is so different between the regular Head and Shoulders shampoo and the Intensive Treatment shampoo. Well the difference is that the Head and shoulders Intensive Treatment shampoo treats selenium sulfide dandruff (regular dandruff) as well as dermatitus, and the regular Head and Shoulders shampoo only treats selinium dandruff and thats all. That is because alot of people only have dandruff and not dermatitus. Dermatitus causes severe itching and redness of the scalp along with white flakes. Some people may think that they only have dandruff but they really have both dermatitus and dandruff.
I have always had very mild dandruff and when I was bleaching my hair blonde it was not noticeable at all, but when I decided to go back to my natural sandy brown hair the dandruff started showing up. My husband has always suffered with severe dandruff and dermatitus that is terribly noticeable, especially because he has black hair. I decided to pick up the Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment about a year and a half ago for my husband and I also decided to give it a try.
I only used the head and shoulders twice because I could not stand the smell and it was very drying to my hair. I allready had dry hair because I have bleached my hair a lot in the past and my hair was slightly damaged. I didn't want to damage my hair any longer but yet I wanted to get rid of the dandruff, so I used a really good conditioner with the Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment but still the smell was overwhelming and my scalp still felt very dry, so I discontinued use. My Husband however used the Head and Shoulders twice a week for a year and noticed a slight improvement in the dandruff. He also quit using the Intensive Treatment because it was not working as well as he expected and was very drying to his hair also. He felt like his hair was thinning a lot after using it too.
You can purchase the Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment at many department stores and drug stores. When I was buying it for my husband I found it at Wal*Mart, Kmart, CVS, Eckerds, Walgreens, and Kroger. The regular Head and Shoulders shampoo comes in a white bottle with blue writing but the Intensive Treatment is specially formulated and comes in a dark solid blue bottle, that will help you tell the difference between them and help you to find it easier also.
I have seen the Intensive Treatment shampoo from the sale price of $3 all the way to $6 for the regular price and varies by store. CVS is usually more expensive but I had found some bottles there for $5.99 high priced, but at buy one get one free so it was only like $3 for an average 13.5 fl oz bottle. I haven't been able to find the Intensive treatment in a larger size bottle though.
All in All I do not really recommend the Head and Shoulders Intensive Treatment because it does not work well on moderate/severe dandruff and it is very drying to the hair and scalp, as is a lot of dandruff shampoos. However if you can stand the smell and only have mild dandruff then this product might work well for you. Also if your hair is normal/oily it might work better also, since it tends to dry hair. This product claims that it is safe for color treated or permed hair but I wouldn't recommend it.
