| WorkingMomof2's Full Review: Health O Meter Large Dial Bathroom Platform Scale ... |
Once again the holidays have come and gone, and those extra nibbles and treats we allowed ourselves have firmly attached themselves to all of the wrong places on our bodies. How did that happen again? Enter the dieter's friend -- the Health-o-meter Large Dial Scale (Model 147KD-90).
Basics on the Health O Meter Scale
The Health O Meter scale has evolved over the years, and is now part of the Sunbeam products line. My first Health 0 Meter large dial scale lasted virtually forever, and would still be working if I hadn't given it to a friend who needed one. As a replacement, I got the newer model 147KD-90 which has a few extra bells and whistles, but still has the same big face, non-slip surface and solid performance as before.
This scale has a fairly large footprint -- that is, the area on your floor that it occupies. It's about 15" long and about 10" wide, white metal with a large curved top. The dial is white, and large (6.5" across) with big black numbers that are easy to read even when I'm groggy in the morning. There are four optional little markers that you can attach to the outside of the dial to mark your previous weight, should you have difficulty remembering your last weight -- more on that later.
The scale has an extremely nice black non-skid surface, it's slightly textured so you don't slip if you're just out of the shower or if your floor was wet at all. The scale has a 300 pound capacity, which I have never personally tested, but I will say that I have a digital body-fat scale and this scale is exactly accurate compared to the other (far more expensive) scale (even when I don't want it to be right!)
This is a very solid, well-made scale. As I said, my last scale was over 10 years old and had no visible aging to it and was still performing as accurately as the day I bought it. The newer model is a slightly different shape but has the same solid feel and performance, and I've had absolutely no problems with it. You just zero it the first day and it's good to go! You should be aware that this is a fairly heavy scale -- I haven't actually weighed it, but I would estimate that it's close to 10 pounds. That means it won't move if you accidentally bump it, but you don't want to have to haul it around a lot, either.
One tip -- the scale comes with four colored markers that you can use to track your weight. If you have four users of this scale, it might be good to let each one have their own colored marker. Or, you (or you & your spouse) can each put a marker on your starting point, and another on your goal weight. Each time you weigh yourself, you can watch the "current weight" marker inch toward the "goal weight" marker. If it's only you using the scale, you can even leave the first marker as a "starting point" and then move a third marker as your current weight. I hope that's not too confusing to follow! I will say that having my goal weight on the scale is a great incentive to stick to a healthy diet, and to get out and exercise!
My Recommendation
I have found Health O Meter to be an extremely reliable product line, and that this scale meets my expectations as such. If you're on a diet, or just trying to maintain your weight (or weight loss) then you know how hard it is to stay motivated. This scale gives you an (optional) way to track your weight loss over time. It's large, easy to read, and the non-skid coating helps prevent you from falling off if your feet are slippery.
I can give this scale a solid five stars as a basic scale that will be useful for most people. The only feature that it lacks is a body-fat analyzer, which you can either purchase separately (Omron has a very nice handheld one that I've used and reviewed below) or upgrade to a body-fat analysis scale if you have sufficient money and need. That's a great upgrade if you're into conditioning; however, most dieters and general users will find that the Health O Meter large dial scale provides the basic information that they need and a tool to stay motivated, all in an attractive and affordable package.
