Re: Singing the phonebook (Reply to this comment)

Ahaha, I love it! Yeah, I was a bit shocked about two things regarding this album's "success"... the first one is that I actually bought it in Wal-Mart, when I was absolutely certain that it wouldn't be there when my mom dragged me there to help her get things for a baby shower. The other was that "What Have You Done" actually charted on the US Mainstream Rock chart at #33. Huh???
Though I would be lying if I said I hated the extended version of the song that came on the US album. The added opening, that isn't on the single edit, is nice. And the thing that really kills the song for me is Caputo shouting "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!", etc. I really don't think he and Sharon sound that bad together when they're actually singing. But the shouting just dominates the song. And it's like "AAHHH! SHUT UP, DUDE!"
I really wanted to give this album five stars, but I just couldn't *quite* do it because of "What Have You Done." One thing I didn't mention in my review that did also bother me was the completely random inclusion of "Stand My Ground" on the US version. Yeah, I love the song and everything, but I went through the trouble of importing The Silent Force, so why the hell did they give the song to me again? Plus, "Final Destination" is just a tad generic. If I could do something besides "4" or "5" I'd probably give the album a 4.49. :)
And I could totally talk about WT all day as well. Like I said in my review, they really have become my favorite of the female-fronted metal bands. I think I must have a crush on Sharon or something, though, because she's really the only reason to like WT more than any of the other femmetal bands.

Singing the phonebook (Reply to this comment)

I adore this album now. It's amazing how much it has really grown on me. The only song I always skip is (obviously) What Have You Done. I am a DJ at my university's radio station, and we get song shipments weekly. Those songs are the only ones we're allowed to play. One week, we got What Have You Done, which shocked me to no end. Any time I play it, I'm sure to emphasize 'this band is usually so much better than this!'
The Cross, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Hand of Sorrow, and Forgiven - all are incredible. Like you said, this album is really WT's most versatile. Sharon tries all sorts of new things, and that's probably why The Heart of Everything gets such love/hate reactions.
So, terrific review. :) Clearly, I could ramble about Within Temptation all day.
