| jsmorris's Full Review: Heather Graham - Eyes of Fire |
Heather Graham is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. She mixes the perfect blend of mystery, romance, and intrigue into her tales. The stories grab you from the very beginning and they don’t release you until the end. Actually some don’t even release you at the end, as I’ve found myself wondering about what happens in the characters’ lives after the book ends. This was the way it was with Eyes of Fire. It kept me riveted even after it ended.
Samantha Carlyle has inherited paradise but at a hefty price. Her mother left her when she was very young and her father raised her on a tropical island in the Bermuda Triangle. Seafire Isle is the perfect vacation spot for those who love the beach and diving excursions. Sam’s life was perfect until a series of events have left it turned upside down. A few years ago, she meets the love of her life, Adam, only to feel he betrayed her and sends him away. Shortly after that experience, her father goes missing when he dives alone and she is left trying to piece together her life. If that wasn’t enough misery, last year history repeats itself when a good friend of hers disappears while diving alone. Both her father and Hank had been looking for a lost ship, The Beladona, which was rumored to have treasure on board. Sam feels The Beladona has taken enough from her life and hopes no one else tries to find it but it seems that everyone is fixated on this lost treasure.
Adam comes back into her life just before someone tries to kidnap Sam and he just happens to be in the right place at the right time to save her. She has a hard time being thankful with the resentment still flowing and the sparks rekindling. She and Adam begin to try to figure out who is trying to cause her harm and what happened to her father and Hank. As they do this, the romance heats up and the reader is on a journey that is a page turner.
Character development is very good however there are too many characters for it not to be confusing. The subplots are also too numerous which makes it confusing. If the cast of characters were decreased by a few which would reduce the subplots the book would have made for a smoother read. Even with these bumps, it was fun!
The negative aspect is that the end seemed a bit rushed and predictable. There were a few twists but for the most part it was all figured out long before the last page was read. Tying everything up neatly doesn’t always make for the best when writing a thriller and tossing a few knots in the line would have made for a bit more suspense. The romantic aspect between Adam and Sam was filled with too much anger for my taste – either get over the past and move on, or stop being romantically involved and holding it over each other’s heads.
Overall it was an interesting book that kept me reading and interested until the very end. It was a good book even with the numerous characters and subplots that tended to confuse me at times. The diving scenes were described in amazing detail which added to the book and I felt as if I was diving right along with the characters. I’d definitely add this to your Must Read list!
