Heavenly Hineys are cloth diapers made by a work-at-home mom, commonly known as a WAHM. There are so many WAHM diapers on the market, but I kept hearing good things about Heavenly Hineys. I was finally able to get on the waiting list and place my order.
Heavely Hineys are available in different choices of fabrics. You get to pick your pattern for the outer fabric, plus pick which material you want inside the diaper, whether it be sherpa, velour or interlock.
The choices don’t end there. The owner, Sherry, will make a side snap or a front snap diaper, depending on your preference. The front snap closes like a traditional diaper, where you pull tabs onto the front panel and secure them. The side snap closes the opposite way. The front panel fastens snaps onto the other part at the sides of the hips.
Sherry even lets you select thigh sizes (chunky, thin or average) since that part of the diaper can be hard to fit. That is one great thing about WAHM diapers as opposed to a store bought diaper. You are able to get more of a custom fit.
These come in four sizes to fit small babies (5-10 lbs) all the way up to extra large babies weighing in at 30-45 lbs., and two more sizes in between.
Our experience
During the waiting process, Sherry kept me informed via an email list as to the progress of my order. I knew when it was shipped out.
The diaper I chose had velour for the inner layer. I love the feel of this, and I know it must be comfortable on baby’s bottom. I chose the option of leg gussets for $2.00 extra. These form “sides” along the leg openings to help hold everything in the diaper instead of leaking out the sides. I have never had a leak with cloth, anyway, but I wanted to try gussets to see what they are like. They allow a very nice fit on the thigh with no gapping. Not only is there elastic at the leg opening and the back of the diaper, but there is also some at the front waistline, which many diapers do not have. The fit is perfect on my daughter.
I was worried about ordering the wrong size. My daughter was about 17 pounds at the time, and I was ordering a medium, which fits 10-20 pounds. Being towards the upper limit of that range, I figured it might not fit. I’m glad to say that she has plenty of growing room left in this diaper. It has just enough stretch in the elastic to fit her curves without leaving red marks.
The sewing on this diaper is nicely done. It is serged along the edges. There are two rows of snaps on each side. Each side has four snaps on waist and four on the thigh, so you can adjust the fit. The tabs on the diaper (where the front snaps onto) have the backs of the snaps covered by material, so no snaps are actually touching my baby’s skin inside the diaper.
This diaper is absorbent and cushy. It is thick in the crotch area where absorbency is important, but the tabs are thinner, so there isn’t excess bulk on the hips where it isn’t needed. The crotch area has an enclosed soaker pad, which is extra layers of material sewn in a strip down the middle of the diaper in the "wet zone" to make it more absorbent.
The only negative thing I can say about these diapers is that they are so hard to come by. Sherry has a large waiting list and isn’t always open to new orders. She does auction them off occasionally, which is one way to be able to try this diaper. A person can also subscribe to her waiting list to keep informed on when she is taking new orders. Since these are popular diapers, I know I’ll be able to get some of my money back out of this diaper when I sell it on auction someday when my daughter outgrows it.
