sweet-indigo's Full Review: Johanna Spyri, Eloise Jarvis McGraw, Helen B. Dole...
If I ever get to be a publishing writer, I'd count myself lucky to write a book half as special as Heidi.
It's mainly set in the Swiss Alps, in a little cabin with some goats high in the mountains.
Heidi is an orphan, sent to live with her grandfather who has, shall we say, a reputation. People are shocked that her aunt would even consider taking her to him. But never fear - Heidi's a spunky kind of girl. She awakens in her grandfather a side of him the villagers don't even believe exists, encouraging him to use his gifts to do good, simply by believing that he wouldn't do anything else. And as well as that, she makes new friends - Peter, the little goatherd, and his grandmother who is blind. Everything is pure and beautifully simple.
And then... disaster strikes. Heidi is forced to move to Frankfurt, a city where she is not happy at all, away from the grandfather she has grown to love. Even so, she makes new friends again - primarily Clara, who is wheelchair bound. And she learns many important things which are to help change not only herself but all those around her in the years to come.
Times are hard for Heidi, but the message of this book is don't give up. Good can come from even bad situations. It's a wonderful story, with attractive settings and an irresistible heroine. It's a book that had a part in changing my life - I am not exaggerating. A little while after reading this book, I became a Christian, and my life hasn't been the same since. I've changed for the better.
Johanna Spyri s wonderful novel, has captured the imaginations and warmed the hearts of readers for more than a century. Full color.More at Buy.com Marketplaces
