| Kallisti's Full Review: Heineken |
Beer from Holland was once among my favorite kinds of beer. Brand used to come in lovely white bottles and it always tasted fresh. Orangeboom was always the one of the best beers to serve very cold. Heineken once had a subtle undertone of honey.
As the Dutch would say, the current state of brewing in Holland is "en ramp" (in decline).
Although once ranked next to the brew-master neighboring countries of Belgium and Germany, Holland beer has suffered many quality issues of late.
As the hype on the Heineken Epinion header claims, Amsterdam & Heineken are inseparable. Unfortunately the two have been seperated. Heineken is no longer brewed in Amsterdam.
Although the Heineken they serve in Holland is better & fresher than the export variety that North America must suffer with, it is still no longer up to par with the great beers of the world. It's often stored improperly in shipment and often suffers in quality.
I do admire Heineken for their "Tap Oke" program in Holland, in which representitives from the brewery inspect the cleanliness of the taps in the bars there, issuing a certificate that insures a quality draft beer. A similar program in the US would probably find fault with 80% of the Heineken taps. No beer -- Heineken included -- should taste like soap or smell like the inside of a locker room.
I no longer drink Heineken. That subtle undercurrent of honey that I used to know and love is gone. Beer drinking Amsterdammers also tend toward German or Belgian varieties of beer now too.
I suppose the more beer a company produces, the worse the quality may suffer.
Oh well. That's life.
I do still like the red star on the green bottle, 'tho. Nice design.
