Although I'm not a fan of the current mass market flood of Heineken, particularly the export variety, on my recent trip to Holland I found one of my favorite beers to be the Heineken Tarwebok -- a limited edition seasonal bock beer which is served on tap in the Netherlands.
It has a distinctive orange hue, echoed in the label which features a ram (that looks more like a goat) and a laurel of wheat stalks.
It's a heavy and complex beer with notes ranging from the sweet to bitter, but leaning more towards the sweet. It's got a creamy head and a soft & substantial body.
I did not find Tarwebok in bottles in Holland, or else I would have taken some back home. It's a great rich drink that goes down easy and may knock you for a loop if you're too big of a pig with it. The percentage of alcohol is 6.5%. Compare that to the export Heineken Special Dark with 4.9% alcohol, or another local Holland-only Heineken product known as Oud Bruin with 2.5%. Stay away from that Oud Bruin when in Holland... it's a taste that only a Dutchman could love.
Bock beer is made from the harvest of barley and is usually available in the fall.
Although I hate Heineken export, I loved this stuff in Holland. It was almost worth the cost of the airfare just to have some.
