I was never a big fan of ketchup personally. But, I do like to dip fries in it, put it on burgers and hot dogs, and horror of horror I like it on sunny-side up eggs! My ketchup brand of choice has always been Heinz. Before kids a bottle of ketchup could last quite a while. Fast forward a few years and my now 7 year old son could not function without ketchup. He puts it on everything including macaroni and cheese, and he doesn't just use a little bit. He uses pools of it at a time. We usually buy the giant bottles of it from Costco warehouse by the 2 or 3 pack and go through more than one of these bottles a month.
I would have a very sad little boy if there was no ketchup.
While we normally purchase the larger bulk sized bottles which last a bit longer - they also are quite heavy and if you drop one the plastic cracks and makes a godawful mess of ketchup all over my white linoleum kitchen floor. I like the fridge door fit bottles and the large sizes that they come in including 46 and 64 oz sizes. I like that these bottles do indeed fit on my fridge door, and dispense easily. Only when the bottle gets low does it spit and sputter and make sounds that are only satisfying to young boys (a signal that it is time to get out a new bottle). The flip top also can get a little sticky from an overzealous child who likes to squeeze out his ketchup in mass quantities.
Heinz Ketchup is absolutely the best tasting ketchup hands down. It is not runny, not too salty, not too tomato-ey. Unlike some ketchup which is almost maroon or brown in color, Heinz is a vibrant red. I've purchased other brands but always come back to it. Why? Because Heinz is the best one, it just is.
The ingredients listed on the bottle are: tomato paste (made from fresh ripe tomatoes) white vinegar, liquid sugar, fructose syrup, salt, onion powder, spices. So its full of sugar and salt but ketchup is also a great source of lycopene which is an antioxidant. So, when I see my son squeezing out what I consider to be disgusting amounts of this stuff onto his plate I remind myself that there are many many worse things, and at least he is getting lycopene!
Also, very important for my family is the fact that:
Heinz Ketchup is suitable for a gluten-free diet.
