Pros: Sleek design, Flawless Performance
Cons: Pricey, Stainless Steel Handle Not For Everyone
I just saw a review for a pizza cutter and in true Epinions fashion a light went off and I thought, Hey, I have one I could write about! So here it is.
Our kitchen utensil drawers are filled with souvenirs of our many trips to Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, Kitchen Kapers and anywhere that caters to the niche tools that make kitchen life interesting. I already love to cook, now with all the toys it just makes the experience all the sweeter.
I remember cutting pizza with a knife. We went through a host of pizza cutting wheels; some with plastic or wooden handles, stainless, or chromed steel, even a plastic wheel. The handles usually went first, or the wheel broke off or we opted for a newer better model. Most all of the wheels we use need to be sharpened from cutting over a pizza stone. If youre getting the impression that we eat a lot of pizza; youre right. Over the years and a couple of kids with a lot of friends, that we generally hosted, we made a point of letting them make their own pizzas from scratch with their own toppings. We have had a ball watching the little faces grow into bigger faces and even as they graduate college, they still make pizzas over at our place.
So, that said we have always had the radar out for the ultimate pizza Cutter, and todays candidate is the Henckels Pizza Cutter
So why, when looking at a variety of pizza cutters priced from $1.99 to 19.99 would I choose the higher priced model? I can tell you in one word, Henckels. I have had a set of their knives forever and couldn't be any happier with them. So, why not?
In the Henckels product line there is a Value line marketed as J.A. Henckels International, which offers value for your dollar and there is the premium brand markeyted as Zwilling J.,A. Henckels of which the Henckels Pizza Cutter is featured.
Folks, this one needs to be placed under the right tool for the job heading. Granted I have used it three times with exemplary results, but theres one thing I have come to expect from any tool, utensil or anything else for that matter; its a consumable and its useful life will come to a certain end down the road. That said, I have to say I am please we found this little gem. Its stainless steel exterior looks sleek and utilitarian while maintaining an air of culinary sophistication worthy of hanging somewhere in an industrial design gallery. I have the perfect place for it, my utensil drawer getting beat about with all my..er.. Our kitchen toys.
The splash shield on the Henckels Pizza Cutter is reminiscent of a front fender on a motorcycle. It is wide enough to catch any splash backs of pizza sauce, and did I mention it looks like a front fender of a motorcycle?
The stainless steel wheel is sturdy and can take the usual downward pressure you would need to exert on it without giving. It has not dulled after considerable use on a pizza stone. I imagine it will need to be sharpened and I will do that with a wet stone to assure
slow careful yet sharp results.
If pressed, the only complaint I would likely register is that some users may find the Henckels Pizza Cutter hard on their palms when pressing down on a hard crust, especially those users suffering from arthritis. Perhaps some will complain about the cold feel of stainless steel. Granted, these are legitimate concerns for some users, but if you are inclined and dont fit in either category, the Henckels fits comfortably in your hand ready to take on the tasks at hand. The handle is hollowed out and that allows just a hint of give which, allows for a little cushioning when bearing down.
The Henckels is beautifully balanced, which takes it to another level. Using it, you are impressed how easily it becomes an extension of your arm. This is really the first pizza cutter I have ever owned that makes the cut once, even through the hardest of crusts. There is absolutely none of the back and forth cutting involved with so many other cutters, and as a result your pizza is clean cut and not surprisingly, there is rarely pizza sauce around the hub of the Henckels wheel, unless the fare is Sicilian.

The Henckels Pizza Cutter. is guilty of austere good looks and practical utility. Its heritage assures will be a cut above the competition every time. Though its shelf life is undetermined by this reviewer, I can assure you its value is not lost on me either. I am enjoying the care and use of the Henckels Pizza Cutter and would not hesitate to go another round with it if, downstream, it is still the best pizza cutter on the block.
