Solid laptop, good performer.

  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
  • Quality of Tech Support:
Pros:Excellent size and weight, especially since it is fully featured with optical drive.
Cons:Auto-dimming oversensitive, very poor speaker
The Bottom Line: Good business product. No flash, just a solid full-featured laptop that doesn't weigh very much and is easy to carry.

I won't get into the specs because you can look those up anywhere. Here's the less quantifyable stuff:

Input:
Although the placement and size of the auxiliary keys leaves a little to be desired, the main QWERTY and number row of the keyboard is sufficiently sized to allow very speedy typing without tripping up on yourself. They keys have a very consistent high quality feel, unlike some consumer line laptops like certain model Sony Vaios. HP's choice of making the "hotkeys" touch sensitive rather than being real physical buttons is a nice styling touch, but when trying to use the laptop in the dark they are a hinderance because you have no way to see where the touch spots are unless you tilt the screen down or have some sort of external light.

Output:
The screen looks great and the backlighting is very consistent and can get extremely bright. The autodimming feature is a nice touch, but it reacts too quickly. If you're in a room with an overhead light and you move your hands or head such that you create a shadow over the sensor, you'll see your screen dim. This is especially apparent if your movement is because you're reaching for something on the desk or even if you're not intentionally moving at all, but the edge of your shadow is over the sensor and keeps covering and uncovering it. Very annoying. Also, the LCD appears to attract dust more quickly than I've seen on laptpos before. The single speaker sounds horrible. At low volumes it is okay, but turned up anywhere over half and it sounds like everything is coming from an AM radio. This makes some VOIP conversations especially difficult if the other party is on a speakerphone.

Battery:
Very impressive. With autodimming enabled and brightness set to about 75%, I can websurf wirelessly for almost 5 hours.

Overall fit and finish:
Very high quality. Nothing flashy, but he keys, hinges, power button, and surfaces are all solid and never feel flimsy.

Recommended: Yes
