Pros: Small, easy to use, reasonably priced.

Cons: Not for total beginners. One glitch after 3 days of use.

The Bottom Line: Easy to use for someone familiar with computers. Cheap for start up business. Compact but expandable.

First let me say that I am not at all a techie but I seem to have common sense and that seems to have let me accomplish the task of making this server work.

The HP Mediasmart Server was actually the only server any of the computer stores were offering. I was worried that it sucked and that no one was buying it so it was the last server available but after using it for a little while it doesn't seem to be the case. I think it is the only server offered in a computer retail store because it is very user friendly and is pretty easy to set up. HP does a great job of making the instructions easy and very visual.

When I opened the box, it looked smaller than in the store. I wasn't sure if this little server could do what we needed. I set up the server to an existing router and installed the server. I barely read the instructions. I just followed on the prompts on the screen and the next thing I know...whalla! I just install the server. I can now save documents on the server. All computers can access the info (if I set it up for them to). I set it up for my computer to have the back up info on the server.

It seemed that saved a lot of info on the server but when I looked to see how much space I took up. It was a small little pie piece.

I ran into two problems. For some reason I don't have it set up so when I install other software that I can click and find the server as the option as to where I want the software to be saved. I just had a small little problem today where I was not able to access the server. THAT was a problem. I set up another user on my computer to have admin rights to access the server. The new user I created was able to get on to the server. I switched back and forth without any success. Then I tried one last time and I was able to get into the server. Very strange but true. I have no idea what happened but I was able to "fix" it within about 30 minutes.

We will be using this server for a small business and we are excited to use it since it is so much cheaper than having someone else set up a server for us or store our info on their server. I hope it works out but it is very user friendly. AND, there are 3 more slots for additional storage space. It will take us years to fill up this server...if it is quicker, that means we are doing very well and can afford another one. Great price for starting up.
