weister42's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Photosmart C6280 All-In-One InkJet...
I bought this printer when Staples had a sale, it was $129 at the time and I also purchased some 96 brightness 24 lbs. paper and a pack of their Photo Plus gloss 4x6 photo paper. I'm running XP Home on a fairly recent PC that have some parts beefed up. By the way the printer's built-in media card reader becomes part of your PC as long as the printer is on and the USB cable is hooked up, which is nice for people without media card readers.
I installed all the included software/driver and just when it was about to finish my PC encountered a critical error and froze up. I rebooted and the software did the same thing. I then went to HP's website and downloaded just the driver, installed that and got the printer to work, so maybe I just have a bad copy. The first thing I noticed about this printer is the noise it makes, it's not loud but you can definitely hear it within the same room. The printer does a boot-up routine of some kind but it takes a good 30 seconds, you can keep the printer on and it'll go into sleep mode after long idles, that way you can avoid waiting for it to get ready at the expense of power bills. IMPORTANT: make sure both of your paper trays and the top cover are seated where they should be or otherwise the printer can't pull the paper trays and it makes some awful gear-grinding-plastic-bending noises. After that the printer does some kind of post-jam cleanup that also sounds like you just broke it. If you do this too much it'll wear out the gears and render the printer useless. Glossy paper have to be placed glossy side down, the printer will tell you if it's wrong. Sometimes it'll ask you to put paper in when there are paper in the tray, not a big deal, just slide the tray in and out to re-seat it. To be honest it was a nightmare for me at first but once I figured out what not to do and how to set the print preferences correctly the printer makes great prints. A typical Facebook picture looks very good on my 4x6 glossy paper, I showed a few prints to my friends and they thought it was developed from a film lab. I also do some eBay work and the black & white invoice prints out within seconds. The printer's on-board editing system is adequate enough to print boarderless or normal prints on various sizes, but cropping is limited due to lack of controls. The printer can also print college-ruled notebook pages which would of been great if I was still in college. The scanner works pretty good, it isn't fast or big but it gets the job done.
As of right now I love this printer. It was a rocky beginning but after I got it all figured out it does everything that I want a printer to do.
