xmt11's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LASERJET P1005 Printer
I bought th P1005 because it was inexpensive, I only require black-and-white printing (I hate worrying about color cartridges and their associated problems all the time), and I had a positive opinion of HP products. The printer works fine most of the time. It's quiet and simple to use. There are not a lot of options to configure. Because there is only black printing, you don't have to buy expensive color cartridges, you don't have to replace the whole cartridge when a single color runs out, and you don't have to worry about setting your printer options manually when you want to spare precious colored ink by printing something only in black and white.
Unfortunately, this printer suffers from many of the same problems I seem to always have with printers, namely, it behaves very badly when it runs out of paper or when you try to cancel a print job. If the P1005 runs out of paper in mid-job, good luck trying to add more and start it up again. Usually you will end up adding more paper to the tray, clicking Retry in the popup that appears in Windows, and then waiting while the printer whirs for two minutes and finally gives you a blinking red light. Then you wait some more, maybe turn it off and on again, and eventually it will realize that you've added new paper.
If you sometimes accidentally print something, or print more pages, than you intended, do not expect to be able to cancel your job. As with printers I can recall ever using, using the "cancel job" menu item from the Windows print taskbar application simply does not work. I have no idea why it is apparently so difficult for manufacturers to implement this functionality correctly. You try to cancel a job; there is no error message; nothing happens on the screen or in the list of pending jobs; you try turning off the printer, unplugging it. You are doomed to print your unwanted job. I keep a pile of junk paper around just so I can offload unwanted jobs. You can try some tricks to stop the printer service, delete the job from the file system. These occasionally work.
The worst is when you print something, run out of paper in mid-job, and then realize that something was wrong with the print job and you don't want to print it anyway. Of course it is impossible to cancel the job. Now you also have to deal with the added hassle of adding more paper and waiting for the printer to realize that you have done so, and the frustration of waiting for your unwanted printout to finish.
Another issue is that a stream of vapors appears over the printer as each page is printed. Presumably all printers create fumes as part of the printing process. One might even consider a visible stream a bonus: I remember to stay away from the unit when printing something so I don't breathe any in.
