As a jack of all trades I was asked to find the best deal on a multifunction printer for two clients. After doing my due diligence as price is usually more of a concern rather than "quality" I opted for the HP OfficeJet 5610 for both of my customers. After coupons and price matching, I was able to get my cost down to about $70 a unit (still a rip).
Setup was a snap as most are. However, not even a year later, one client called to tell me the carriage drive was jamming. I went over, couldn't figure anything that I could do, hopped online with HP chat support, did everything I did an little more to be told it was not a software issue, that it was something with the hardware. They told me they'd call in two days to set up delivery for a new product. Never called. However, my second client with the 5610 did, informed me hers was doing the same thing. She was able to resolve to get a different unit herself, and when I contacted HP again about the first unit, I was told they'd ship a new 5610 to me. (it is on the way). Question though, why if they know this is crap, are still going to pass it off on angry customers? Very disappointed with HPs thinking on this.
I have long been an HP customer as I have had an HP OfficeJet R40 (going on 10 years) and only one repair which I was able to do myself (drive belt). So maybe something is to be said with you get what you pay for. I would have just hated to have spent $400 on the 5610 printer or one comparable for a similar issue. Wish there was more education available for the making of printers.
My recommendation is if you buy this printer, pay the $10 for extended warranty. I am 2 for 2 on crappy 5610 units.
