Nice features but questionable quality
Written: Dec 23, 2008
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Features for the price, and print quality.
Cons:Build quality, engineering, software, and support.
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend the printer, too many quality issues to be considered acceptable. Support I would also rate below average.
Let me start by saying this is the first HP printer we have owned, I have been using Canon printers for as long as I can remember. We were tempted into this HP printer through a printer recycle/exchange program and the great set of built in functionality. We have owned the printer for 9 months and I feel I now have enough experience with it to write a review about it.
Features: This printers list of features in lengthy so I will only point out the more interesting I have experience with, see HP for the full detailed list. -Wireless and wired networking built in. This is great since you do not need to rely on another computer to be your printer server if you have more then one computer. -Memory card reader. This supports Memory Stick, Compact Flash, SD and others. A very handy feature if your computer does not have a memory card reader like a Mac we had in the past. You can access these memory cards from over the network or just use them to input images to print directly. -Copy. Nice because you can make a copy quickly without even bothering to fire up your computer. -Automatic document feeder. Most people are use to these at work but great to have on a home machine for when you want to copy a bunch of sheets. -PictBridge. This allows you to print directly from your camera to the printer without having to use the computer. You need to have a camera that supports PictBridge but many cameras from many companies support this standard. -Built in color LCD screen. This screen comes in handy for doing anything from previewing pictures, setting up various settings or checking on printing status. Nice after coming from printers without screens as you do not have to wonder what the error is, this printer tells you. -Fax. Great to be able to take care of this from home for those rare occasions you need to send one out.
What I like: -Features. From the list of features and the explanations I gave next to them you can see the good sized list of handy features this printer has built into it. We got a great deal on our printer with the exchange program HP had so no one else was able to offer us this much printer for this kind of money. -Price. This printer can be had for a good price once again keeping in mind the feature set. -Speed. The black speed is listed as 34 ppm, color is 33 ppm. In real life it is just plain fast at printing out whatever. -Individual ink tanks. I myself will not buy a printer that combines all the colors into one ink tank. In general you will find that you tend to favor one color over another with combined tanks the others get wasted when one empties out. This printer has 6 different tanks allowing you to just replace the one that has run dry. The tanks are as follows: a large black (10 ml), cyan (4.5 ml), magenta (4.5 ml), yellow (4.5 ml), light cyan (4.5 ml), light magenta (4.5 ml). The tanks are easy to replace by lifting the front of the printer and use a shape and color matching system to help you identify the correct tank.
What I don't like: -Quality. I am not talking about print quality but engineering and build quality. I have had trouble with the paper pickups not getting sheets and they need more frequently cleaning then any printer I have ever owned, we even keep ours covered when not is use. The printer takes small chips out of the leading edge of the paper, seems to be a defect to ours. We also have an issue that sometimes when you go to shut down the printer it crashes in part of the process. This is a lot of quality issues from one printer that I am concerned about and makes me think I should have selected another printer. -Support. Support is pretty lousy. To fix issues like the paper chip they had me moving power from a surge strip to a wall saying that the surge strip is not giving it enough power to print. Then they tried to tell me the printer was not under warranty when it was, thankfully had the receipt to prove it. -Drivers/software. Others have commented on their size, which I agree with and the suggestion to install the minimal. I have also noticed issues that if the printer is powered off and you power it on the drivers cannot discover the printer automatically when you go to print. You have to go into the HP utilities and tell the driver to connect manually to the printer. I have also had issues with the automatic updater tying up system resources indefinitely.
Conclusion: I know I had some good things to say about this printer but the issues of quality from design, to build, to software has me wishing I had not picked up this printer. I cannot recommend it to others. After owning so many Canons and not having issues with any of them this is unacceptable to me to have so many with just one HP. I also found the support to be worse then any I had experienced from any other technology company. I put the printer has an average learning curve. The printer is actually easy to use initially but working around the issues has been a learning curve for myself. This printer seemed to have a lot going for it but I feel there are better choices out there. If I had to make the purchase again I would look at Canon or try out the new line of Kodak printers, their other products have worked great for me.
