paradoxsm's Full Review: Apple iPod classic 4th Generation from HP (40 GB) ...
While it may not have a Media reader, built in playlist editing, feature-x, feature-y Feature-Z it does it's job very well and has that sexy styling only Apple can provide.
The usage is super simple and it has the wonderfully easy "dial wheel" which now performs more than one function. SO easy when driving. It also has a nice fast power-up (20 seconds) from full reset unlike some competing products which can take 3 minutes to start.
and the sound......
FANTASTIC, when you have a device that makes every song have soul, you know it's a winner. even on "eq-off" it's perfect
When I first bought the unit, I had reservatons afterwards, I was thinking, what a waste of money.
As I played with it more I realised that it was one of those things I don't tire of, the simple fact that your hear 6 songs on the radio and know that each and every song in that stations playlist is in my pocket at the click of a button.. WOW.
While it may not be as featured as competing units, The iPod was created as a Music player, it acheives it's intended task very well, with minimallist time, clunk or pages and pages of menus like a nokia phone.
The G4, the one you are looking at, is highly recommended if you want a quick starting music player with no fuss.
The itunes is simple to use and has many functions however is clunky and may drain a slower PC to it's toes. (read the bottom for alternatives) and no win98/me support.
If you are looking at buying an older model, DONT.
The Generation 3's are terrible, they cannot drive any headphones beyond half volume without distorting terribly, have a sub par hard drive mounting procedure which twists the HDD's badly, terrible battery life, about 6 hours max. And have irritating controls, The clickwheel in the G4is a vast improvement.
If you want to play ogg's, play with pictures, and fiddle, the iRiver might be more up your alley. take a look at the iPod and other media player before making your final choice. the IPOD was just up my alley and I love the unit and being able to take my entire CD collection EVERYWHERE
SOFTWARE
The supplied iTunes does it's job very niceley indeed but does become a pain when swapping music or using it on different PC's or using it on a Win98 machine.
There are alternative managers. I usually use Winamp 5 with an iPod plugin.
The other one which I use as it's loaded ON THE IPOD is YamiPod, no installs required! I have not used it to load music so I cannot comment here but it's an ideal away from home manager as it simply executes from the hard drive of the ipod!
win98/me support.
The iPod is a removable mass storage device.
(you will still need someone with a XP/2k machine for the first intitialization)
A win98 driver and a quick tutorial is available here:

www.ipodhacks.com also has sone great info on fiddling with the iPod.
(Music piracy is a CRIME, would you steal a CD from a shop? no.)
