| char.mike's Full Review: Hi Ho Cherry-O |
This game was bought for my daughter as a Christmas gift. Her Daddy saw it and just had to get it to add to the many toys she already was getting. I'm glad he did.
Hi-Ho Cherry-O is made by Milton Bradley and is labeled one of My First Games. The outside of the box shows three children with buckets of cherries under a cherry tree. There is a decent size warning label in the lower right corner. This says WARNING: Choking Hazard=small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
One of the nicest parts to this game is the game board stays in the box. You lift the top off and the playing field is in the bottom of the box. This makes for a very sturdy game. Something anyone with children can appreciate.
There are four trees in each corner of the board along with four buckets. The cherries are stored in these buckets. Easy clean-up and storage, too. Quite nice if I say so!
A spinner is in the center of the board. There are seven sections to the spinner. One section has one cherry, another has two cherries, one has three and one has four cherries. The other three section have a bird, a dog and spilled bucket of cherries.
How to play the game:
Each tree has ten holes punched out to place the cherries in, to start the game, place a cherry in each hole. The youngest child goes first and spins the spinner. Depending on which section is landed on, you do different moves.
Section 1 = 1 cherry-remove one cherry from your tree and place in bucket.
Section 2 = 2 cherries- remove two cherries
Section 3 = spilled bucket - place all cherries in your bucket back on the tree.
Section 4 = 4 cherries-remove four cherries.
Section 5 = dog-place two cherries back on the tree.
Section 6 = 3 cherries-remove three cherries.
Section 7 = bird-place two cherries back on tree.
HOW DO YOU WIN?
The first person to pick all their cherries wins. Quite simple and easy for little ones to understand.
AHHHH, but it can take awhile to remove all the cherries. That naughty little dog and bird make sure of it. Just when you think you've won. Snag, the bird steals a cherry and what do you have to do? Darn, you have to put a cherry back on the tree. And if it's not the bird or dog causing problems, it you knocking over your bucket of cherries. Now, just how clumsy do you think you are? Well, this game will let you find out quick!
IS IS FUN?
You bet! Brennah just giggles everytime Mommy or Daddy has to put cherries back on the tree. She smacks herself in the head and says "Oh Man" whenever the bird or dog steals one of her cherries or if she knocks over her bucket! Yup, lots and lots of giggles and grins with this game.
EDUCATIONAL?
Another yes, this game helps with her math skills. We point out to her how many cherries she has left after subtracting a few or adding a few. Makes me happy and my daughter smart!
This game is also great for helping develop fine motor skills. This is a big plus for us, as my little one has developmental delays and has problems with this. What a great way to have fun with occupational therapy! Yippee!
DO I RECOMMEND THIS GAME?
Yes, yes and another big YES. We have had tons of fun, lots of giggles and a very happy little girl. She has not had the pleasure of playing with other little ones, but I can just imagine all the giggles, smiles and yes, even the pouty faces when the dog or bird gets their cherries.
CLEAN UP:
It's a breeze, just put ten cherries in each bucket and put the lid on. Yup, that's it! Wow!
NOTE:
Please remember this game has small parts and if you have younger children, you will need to keep an eagle eye on them. The cherries pose a serious choking hazard. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
So come on gather your little ones together and go cherry picking! You'll be glad you did.
