It is amazing where youth sports takes you and your family. Our basketball team was invited to play in the Wisconsin youth basketball state tournament this spring, and this tour took the Duckling family to "Up-North" Wisconsin. If you're not a native Wisconsinite, then you probably think all of Wisconsin is pine trees, large hills, and undeveloped lakes. However, that stereotype does not really start until Stevens Point, Wausau, and other areas we call central Wisconsin. Our games were scheduled to be played in Wausau and Merrill and we looked for a convenient hotel for our team. We got a late start on booking and thought we were lucky to book this Holiday Inn. While the distance from Merrill was a ways, it was close enough to Wausau to make the experience reasonable.
The Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites we were booked into was actually in the city of Rothschild, a southern suburb of Wausau. We were about 5 miles from Wausau and 15 miles from Merrill, not exactly a short walk to our gyms. The location, while right off of Interstate 39 in Rothschild was a bit strange, located by a power plant and a milk factory along with a former outlet mall, makes it a unusual. You can walk to a grocery store and a couple of shops and that is about it. The hotel is large for the area a convention type hotel if necessary however, this weekend, it was at capacity with junior ball players and their families.
We had a fair team rate of $92 a night for a nice sized room, with two double beds. The room size was a bit bigger than average and had a very large bathroom, with two sinks. The room also had a microwave, large TV with cable and pay per view, a desk with lamp and easy-access electrical outlet. Complimentary wireless, high-speed Internet access was provided and took a bit of doing to be connected. The telephones had voice mail and complimentary local calls were included. We received a complimentary USA Today newspaper and the compact refrigerator, and coffee/tea maker were life savers, especially with the grocery store available. Hair dryer and an iron/ironing board were also available. The room rate and size rates 4 stars, location off the freeway, 3 stars.
Check-in was a breeze, I had the confirmation number and went smooth. The front desk staff was helpful and when we had a problem, it was taken care of immediately. We requested to be in a group with some other families and we were all located on the same wing and floor, which was nice. Above average on the initial experience, plenty of free parking is also available.
Amenities include a very nice sized pool and whirlpool, along with a smaller zero depth kids pool. Our boys enjoyed the pool as it was plenty big for the team members and anyone who wanted to swim and play. There was a small work out room next to the pool and video games were ringing the pool area. We had plenty of "patio" room to watch the boys and carry-on a conversation with the other adults. The whirlpool was fine. The pool area was a good average.
Lobby area was huge, which was needed with all the teams staying in the hotel. The hotel was very generous, allowing teams to bring their own food for their parties and allowed coolers, warmers, snacks, and beverages in the area. While continental breakfast was provided Mon-Fri, because of the large contingent, the management authorized breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday, with teams of hungry boys and girls, this was no small task. Fruit, cereal, juices, toast, bagels, coffee, tea were provided, plenty of choices! Way to go Holiday Inn management!
It was a NCAA basketball tournament weekend, with games on TV and the bar was crowded. I did not go in and I did not use the restaurant facilities. The Green Mill is a full service restaurant and also serves the hotel room service. There is a Tony Roma's, Culvers, and Denny's nearby.
The comfortable room, the flexibility by the management, and the large lobby all make up for the strange location for an above average rating. While I wish we could have been closer to Wausau rather than a power plant, one cannot have everything. If we booked on our own, the rate would have been over $100 so we did save some bucks on the team rate. Comfortable, fairly convenient, friendly staff, give this hotel a try.
