patriciak's Full Review: Hi Tor Hi Tor Neo Diet for Cats 24/6oz Cans
I have had the sad experience of several of my cats developing Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) in their later years. One aspect of this horrid condition, is a loss of appetite. All owners of a CRF kitty know what it is like to hunt for a suitable food that their cat will actually eat. So...did my cats eat this food? Read on to find out.
Hi Tor Neo - What's Special About It
This formula was designed to meet the needs of cats dealing with renal failure. The company describes it as being lower in protein and phosphorus, two important to know details about any food you feed your CRF kitties. It was also designed to be palatable for them.
It is unfortunate that this has meat by-products as the largest portion of the protein it contains. I do not doubt the value of fresh caught prey's "innards", but I do doubt the quality of what any cat food company is using, when they list it as "by-products". However...this food does have the pluses of being an available, non-prescription food, one that is not only lower in protein and phosphorus, but one which per a support list I was on for owners of CRF kitties, extremely popular with some cats.
Response by my CRF Kitties
It was mixed. Patrick liked it for a time...which was a win win for me, as we dealt with his CRF for four years, and before we were at the assist-feeding stage, anything I could find that he would eat, that was good for him, made me very happy. Tyler and Tippy just did not like this food at all. It would remain in their food bowls, looking pretty sorry by the time I realized it was a definite "NO, I WON'T be eating this!"
I think Patrick liked the consistency a great deal, it is very soft, pate in type. There is no gravy, no broth. It seems fatty, would be the best way to describe it. The color is non-descript, and it isn't one of the better smelling canned cat foods out there!
I wish I had been able to trial just a couple of cans of Hi Tor Neo Diet for Cats- but I was only able to find this online, and in a case quantity of 24/6 oz. cans.
Cost was not obscene, as some prescription canned foods for CRF kitties can be, and frankly, I did not care. I would spend anything that would help my CRF kitties feel better and live longer.
I do recommend this (with the caveat that you are dealing with some by-products) as worth trying. It may be just the food to get your off-appetite CRF kitty eating better again. 3 Stars - minus 1 for the by-products.
