Where you at my place watching these movies with me?! Sounds like it! We have the same... the very same... opinions of both films!

My son & I found The Hidden by accident a few years ago. And, we LOVED it (even though at first I wondered if Michael Nouri had fallen so far to have to do second rate films... but that was before I saw the entire film). However, when we came across The Hidden II, based upon how much we'd liked the original one, I thought this should be good. The operative there is "should". It wasn't. In fact, like you, I thought it was Horrible with a capital "H" not horror. Stupid, insipid, asinine. Need I go on.

Excellent review, Ander! Thanks so much.

Heh:)

Well, I would rate The Hidden at four stars... I've been kinda working on a review of Lord of the Rings (four stars).

Just because I don't rate something four stars doesn't mean that I didn't like it. My recommendation is much more important than the rating anyhow and the actual reviews are more important than either one of those.

Nope, I haven't seen Ocean's Eleven. I am going to wait for video with that one. In general though, last year was pretty mediocre so far as films go. Not bad really but geeze there were only a couple films that I would give four stars to last year (Momento and FotR btw). A few came close though and really A Knight's Tale was one of those. I actually enjoyed that one quite a bit... Some others that came close would be The Others and Monsters, Inc.

On the other hand, there weren't that many films last year that I would give less than three stars to either... Offhand, the ones that I wrote on (The Musketeer and Ghosts of Mars) and Pearl Harbor (two stars) are the only ones that I can think of...

I notice that only one of your movie reviews gave a rating of over 3 stars, have you ever seen a movie you like? And, if youd stop watching crap like a Knight's Tale, The Hidden 2, and some of those others, you might find a movie you enjoy. Have you seen Oceans Eleven?

Re: $50M Question... (Reply to this comment)

No idea what Michael Nouri had to do that precluded his inclusion in this film but no doubt it was better than this film!!!

His daughter is the female lead (I kinda mentioned it in passing but it got a bit muddled). His wife kinda disappeared from the equation.

I enjoyed the first one very much too. In many ways (including the ones that you cite). Another reason that I was disappointed in the sequel is that it totally ditched the family thing which I thought was something that was pretty strong in the first one. They didn't feel the need to insert the mandatory sex scene in the first one because you had the stripper scene in the film to liven it up in that way... So you had some evidence that Beck had a solid family relationship (that wasn't predictably messed up by outside events like in so many other films). They totally messed all of that up in the second film.

Erk. Well, now that editing is gone for some reason, I should reiterate this. I am *not* recommending this film. I kinda started liking it slightly more than one star after watching it half a dozen times (to prepare for the review) but that doesn't make it a good film. I liked the previous one. It doesn't look like you did though?

I appreciate the compliment:) If edit/delete comes back, I will probably be writing more. I still have a review to get done from a previous W/O that I have been working on (it is now about three weeks late... Ummmm... I hadn't been writing because I have been trying to finish that one first)

$50M Question... (Reply to this comment)
by LEDOMAINE
What better "thing" did Michael Nouri have to do, I wonder? In fact, when I saw him in The Hidden, I marveled at how adequately he played his part. (Wonder what happened to his wife and child in the sequel?)

Anyway, how sad. I liked The Hidden, also. I thought it was one of the most credible, most believable "Alien invaders" story lines I'd ever seen. Why? Mostly because they thought like us (good guy vs bad guy) and I could readily relate. Also, the characters' mannerisms and behaviors were realistic. My favorite was how "Mac" related to Nouri's character's daughter, and she to him-- all through the movie after Nouri brought him home to meet his family. MacLaughlin was an honorable man, whether alien or from Earth. And the "bad" guy alien was typically bad guy opportunist... exactly how I'd expect Earth's bad guys to behave, if they had unrestrainable powers as had he.

Great points and review (sorry I've rambled here, but, I thought it--the first one; not the sequel--was a good flick, too-- though extremely under-rated/appreciated), Ander. Enjoyed it (as I'm sure you could tell) LOL

Heh:) I have seen worse sequels... Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm... I just can't think of them right now. I guess incrementally this is probably the worst one that I know of (in terms of going downhill from the original). Most of the really atrocious sequels came from really atrocious films in the first place (the ones I mentioned weren't even really that bad imho--just not good).

No problem on the w/o:) It was fun. Thanks for inviting me!

The Hidden II (Reply to this comment)
by shadow8
Ander,

Ugh...(the movie, not your review of course), this movie totally stunk. Thanks for bringing back memories (I think) of this truly godawful sequel.

I saw The Hidden II a long time ago, and my initial reaction was, "What the hell were these guys thinking?" This film was by far one of the worst sequels I have ever endured. Hell, the fifteen minutes flashback of the original The Hidden movie was so much more entertaining than this sequel itself.

I couldn't agree with you more on this sequel. It most certainly stinks. I also agree with you on many valid points, such as the fact that when a sequel makes multiple references to its title, you know that it ain't a good thing.

Anyway, thanks for participating in this write-off. Happy Halloween!
