Staceys1's Full Review: High School Musical All Access Disney 30+ Pp Book
Two or three years ago, my daughter was fully engulfed in Disney's High School Musical craze, but now that she is in Junior High School, she seems to have outgrown it. While in that phase one of the items that she begged for was this book entitled Disney High School Musical: All Access.
This oversized, thirty-page hardcover book is best described as a scrapbook detailing the events that occur at East High during High School Musical and High School Musical 2. The landscape book measures about 10.5" by 12.5" and is printed in full color on thick cardboard pages, which is necessary because some pages have pockets to pull papers out of and others have flaps to lift. Most of the scenes that are depicted cover both pages, and since the book lies flat, it is great for two or three girls to crowd around and giggle over.
There are bits of the movie storyline included in this book, and it begins with an introduction to the characters of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in the form of a postcard and an email telling friends about their winter break trip to the Sky Mountain Ski Resort. There is a copy of the invitation to the New Year's Eve party where they meet along with a list of real life Karaoke tips such as try to pick a song that you know so that you will be more comfortable singing it.
Since Gabriella's family recently moved to a new city, she received a new student packet from her new school, East High. A list of "important" information is printed in this book, such as the school's colors, mascot (Wildcats), biggest rivals, the school cheer and the words to the fight song. Also on this page is an envelope containing two Wildcat stickers that could be put on a notebook if your child so chose.
The musical itself is an integral part of High School Musical and Sharpay and Ryan Evans are introduced to us along with Mrs. Darbus at the auditions and call backs. Again, there is practical information about performing on stage, some of which are superstitions, such as say "break a leg" rather than "good luck" and warning that if you whistle backstage or in the dressing room, you will be fired and the play will be a failure. The musical performed is "Twinkle Towne" and a playbill is stuck into a pocket on one of the page.
Troy's love of basketball is important in the story, and two pages are dedicated to him and his teammates. The schedule, roster, tickets and pictures from games are featured here, along with a small, removable pennant that say "Go Wildcats!"
While Troy is busy with basketball, Gabriella is busy with academic clubs and other students are involved in different after school activities. Two pages are dedicated to flyers and advertisements for the events sponsored by the various clubs. One theme of High School Musical is that you need to be true to yourself and follow your dreams and that you can be more than one thing, such as a jock and an actor. Two pages have flaps shaped liked lockers with a note that encourages us to open them to see what people are really like. Zeke's locker shows us that in addition to basketball, he really likes being a chef and a peek into Sharpay's locker shows us a note from Zeke saying that he sees beyond her shallow self-centeredness to the sweet person underneath.
We are reminded that this story takes place in a school with an assignment from the art teacher to create a self-portrait by drawing a still life not of yourself, but of something that you are passionate about. A small pad of blank paper is attached to the book for your creation, alongside Taylor McKessie's Bunsen burner and beaker showing her love of chemistry and Kelsi Nielsen's sketch of a piano.
The book continues to show us a peek into Sharpay's life at the Lava Springs Country Club, complete with her wallet containing an identification card that can be taken out. Since most of the rest of cast works at the Club, their employee identification cards are shown, along with a work schedule and the complete recipe for Zeke's Chocolate Chip Cookies.
During the summer, Sharpay produces and directs the Midsummer Night's Star Dazzle Show and this book includes a list of her "audition rules". Some have practical applications such as limiting the time of your audition piece and ensuring that any animals that are part of your act are on a leash or properly caged. Item seven on the list, however, specifically tells others not to upstage Sharpay since it is her destiny to be a star. While there is no removable playbill for this show, there is a folder that contains headshots of six of the main characters.
At the end of the book a "secret code" is provided that can be entered online to gain access to songs from the movies, trivia questions, games and more.
Disney High School Musical: All Access is recommended for ages eight and up and has a list price of $19.99. This fun and colorful book touches on all of the pertinent portions of the movies and the combination of short pieces of text along with photographs from the movies, and the inclusion of removable notes and other items makes this a great gift for anybody who enjoys these Disney movies.
