Pros: Works effectively if you follows the vet's orders and the cats will eat it.
Cons: Not natural, free of by-products, organic or fresh.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this a great way to treat your cat in a flare-up. Your vet will tell you to stay on this cat food, but you don't really need to.

| furryloo's Full Review: Hill's Science Diet Prescription Diet Feline c/d D... |
To see our personal experience with our cat and UTI, read below.
WARNING TO READERS: If there is ANY blood in your MALE cat's urine, you must immediately take them to the vet, they can die within hours. The blood gets backed up in their bladder and poisons their kidney system. A female cat's uretha is wider and you may be able to wait - but you should still call a 24-hour vet and ask then for advice.
WHY IT's PRESCRIBED:
There are three different variations of UTI's that can be caused for different reasons. Buying any kind of cat food in the store does not always work because you may be treating the wrong kind of UTI and even making it worse. Always have your vet test your cat's urine first before trying to treat it yourself. Check out Hill's website for further details. This type of cat food specifically treats struvite crystals. In other words, it helps create a more acidic urine.
SIGNS OF UTI in your cat:
Unusual or stronger aggression towards other pets, urinating on your laundry or sheets or furniture, higher frequency of litter box, laying belly on cold or hot surfaces, blood in urine, and more.
OUR OPTIONS:
Aside from having to feed our cat this food, our other options were according to the vet were: a sex-change surgery. Yes! You heard that right. The uretha for a male is so small, that they sometimes just remove it and turn the male cat into a female cat anatomically. There is no hormone therapy involved, but this seemed a bit radical for us. Another option was from a homeopathic vet, to feed him only raw organic food (meat and rice) but this can get very costly and if this cat food had not worked - I most likely would have gone with this option.
OUR COST:
A 35 pound bag costs us 32.99 every time. I think that this is well worth the price.
TASTE:
Only one of our cats out of three has a UTI. Fortunately, this is safe enough for all the cats to enjoy, provided that they are not being currently treated for something else. All three of them seem to really enjoy this food quite a bit. However, if given the choice, they always opt for the Wysong's Uretic first. The texture is a bit greasy.
SIDE EFFECTS:
This food seems to cause one of them to throw up orange vomit or have orange diarrhea on occasion. Not really sure what causes this. My male cat seems to be slightly allergic to this. He tends to sneeze a lot and scratch his ears when he is on this diet.
WHY IT ONLY HAS FOUR STARS:
I don't like the fact that it has brewers rice, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, and pork fat as it's main ingredients. According to my research, cats should not be eating pork products and by-products are believed to cause many of the health problems that cats have such as tumors, cancers, etc. Also, meat should always be the first ingredient, not a grain.
The other cat food that I like to feed them (Wysong's Uretic) has the following: Chicken, Chicken Giblets, Ground Oat Groats, Fish Oil as the main ingredients. See how meat is the first ingredient for Wysong, whereas rice is the first ingredient for c/d diet. Big Difference!
OUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
I have a sweet male cat, all black, who adopted us as a kitten. He had been left on the side of the road to die when some friends of ours found him and his band of brothers. As a result, he was never fully weaned and seems to have a long host of health problems. Beginning with allergies and ending with UTI's.
It was, and still is important to me that my cats eat high quality cat-food. I tried everything, raw cat food, dry organic cat food and much more. I even at one point was making all of his foods from scratch.
It was very hard for me to start him on this prescription diet because I ultimately want my cats to eat something that is at least by-product free. Unfortunately, there is no company yet that make prescription cat food of this high quality. My three cats don't seem to mind switching cat foods. They are pretty much used to this.
OUR TREATMENT:
I've realized that I can still feed him the high-quality cat food that he enjoys (Wysong's Uretic) and the occasional natural food treats - as long as I treat his UTI's as soon as they surface with a 3-day dose of penicillin and 3-6 weeks straight of the c/d diet.
I use Pro-Pen-G penicillin which I buy from www.drfostersmith.com and administer it myself with a shot. Any vet can teach you this. Be sure to thoroughly investigate this first.
