A Life Saver (Reply to this comment)
by mkinsel
Hill's Science Diet Prescription Diet Feline c/d was literally a life saver for cat Cassie.

Cassie was a 14 year old female grey tabby whom I adopted when she was but a tiny kitten. At 14 she began to slow down and lose interest in play. She suddenly lost her appetite and quickly lost weight. I took her to a local Vet who said she was just low on potassium. They gave me a tube of potassium and told me to force feed her X amount every day. She layed on towels in my closet, never moving. I put a bowl of food next to her, with every nugget counted so that I could tell if she ate any. She didn't. I concluded that the Vets diagnosis was wrong, and took Cassie to another Vet recommended by a family friend.

The new Vet diagnosed her with feline hypothyroid, and recommended I place her in the local Pet Hospital because she needed nutrition immediately. The Pet Hospital force fed her every few hours over an entire weekend, and also rehydrated her with a saline IV drip. When I picked her up the following Monday, she looked so much better. I took her back to the Vets office where they kept her for several days.

When I picked her up from the Vets office, they prescribed daily medication for the thyroid, as well as Hill's Science Diet Prescription Diet Feline c/d cat food. Again, I counted every nugget of food I put in her bowl, so I could keep track of how much she ate. She went from eating 0 nuggets a day to 15 nuggets, then 25 nuggets, then 40 nuggets. The high nutrient content in c/d is just what she needed to regain her weight and strength. Most of all...she LOVED this food and soon began devouring every thing I gave her. It literally saved her life.

Thank You Hill!!!

We found a better canned food! (Reply to this comment)

My cat, Elvis, had the same response to Science Diet's wet food: "You want me to eat THIS?!" But there's another brand of canned food, Royal Canin's URINARY SO 30, that he just LOVES! So I feed him that and the Science Diet dry food, and all is well with our world. The Royal Canin is a prescription food also, available at the vet or ordered with a prescription. I'm not sure if it's okay to feed to other kitties; I'd check with the vet first. Elvis is an only child.

I use to work at a vet and we gave the wet c/d to sick cats dogs that wouldn't eat. I have seen this food say animals lives from just being to sick to eat. They would eat the heck out of this (the wet variety). AND it smelled so good! We use to take bets trying to get one of us workers to try it!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your little "parrot"...

I was shocked when I first heard about this dreaded condition and then when my other cat developed it as well...Magnesium seems to be the bad key word now...nothing on the bag says low in ash though it is listed way on the bottom of the ingredients list....

and eating seafood is a huge no no as are table scraps...the vet told me just yesterday not to do what i was doing when I told him I was cooking fresh chicken breasts for Luke...:(

it's enough to make you want to scream!
Thanks for stopping by

As a kid I lost my Siamese to "The Dreaded Crystals." He was my special buddy, because I had found him dumped in a parking lot at 3 weeks ould in the middle of one of the infamous Texas 100 Degree Days. It is rare for cats to bond as tightly w/their Humans as he and I did over the years. He was always a runt because of his early weeks, and ended up spending his life riding on my shoulder like a parrot. Sadly, at 9 years of age he developed this dreaded disease. I am not sure what to look out for now, because this was the eighties---but back then--the ingredient that was notorious for this was--"ASH"--Yeah--ash, occassionally labeled ash, pot ash, etc. It's no wonder I sometimes go ballistic on the animal foods front. Read the labels--and if there is anything that can be construed as ASH--avoid it at all costs. High ash content used to be the bugaboo, and may still be, but under a different name.

Sounds like money well spent... (Reply to this comment)

...at least compared to the vet bills! I often wondered how come cats are so susceptible to urinary/kidney problems. I had that same issue with my cat Bailey who entered his 8th life a while back. He was a stray I adopted because he had the guts to stand up to my two Dobermans and then managed to boss them around for the remainder of his life.
This recent recall makes you wonder exactly what they put into pet food. On the other hand, we've had plenty of issues with human food as of late.
I'm glad to hear your cats are 'safe'!
