Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
The horror genre is officially dead. All you hear now is about directors/screenwriters are remaking classic horror films that were back 20+ years ago. It seems no one has a fresh idea for a horror film that is any good to get recognition. Don't get me wrong, some remakes are better than the original, such as, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hills Have Eyes, and the recent, The Last House On The Left. However, some horror movies shouldn't have been messed with such as, Halloween and the new Nightmare On Elm Street, which hasn't even come out yet! A lot of people are against it; Robert Englund is the only Freddy Krueger, but we'll see how it goes when it comes out on April 30, 2010.
The Hills Run Red, which not to get confused with the 1966 film or The Hills Have Eyes, is a straight-up horror film. It's bloody, it's raw, and it doesn't care if it offends. The kind I like! I have tried so hard not to buy movies that I have not seen, because I've had my share of really bad ones and I got tired of wasting hard, earned money on crap. Thankfully, after weeks of "being good", I picked up this baby and I'm glad I did! The movie is about this group of friends who are on the hunt for a lost horror film. This horror film was the goriest, bloodiest slasher film ever. Rumor has it, the victims in the movie really died for real, even the director, and only one person survived was the director's daughter. Now, die-hard fans of the horror genre are out for the secret location where the movie was shot, along with the daughter. However, they find out that Babyface, the killer in the movie, is far from dead as he kills off each fan one by one.
The Hills Run Red isn't your ordinary horror film; it actually has a strong plot, good actors, and a cool looking killer. Although, The Hills Have Eyes have plot twists that aren't new to the genre and you'll figure it out in 45 minutes in the movie, you are actually interested in finding this lost horror film. First off, the only reason you watch films like Hills Run Red is because you're a horror fan, right? Correct, and we horror freaks are fascinated by films like this and if we were put into this situation, you can bet your butts that we would do the same thing. Let's say we went to a location where the recent Friday the 13th was filmed at, looking to see if Jason is really there. Yeah, sounds cool, huh? Hills Run Red is definitely an entertaining film and I was quite surprised by that. I was never bored in the film, thanks to John Dombrow for writing the screenplay.
Thus, the film is very bloody and we horrror fans, love that! We got a great story, and now we have gruesome killings. On the front of the DVD cover, there is a sticker that mentions that the DVD is not to be sold to minors and it is filled with blood, violence, and nudity. Love the promos, and to be honest, that is one of the reasons I bought this. I wanted to prove this film wrong, but I was proven wrong. Also, did I mention that Babyface is an awesome killer? Yes, he is. The chase scenes in this film remind me of a classic Leatherface and that to me, is awesome. Genuine terror, something chase scenes lack these days. Also, should I mention that the actors give strong performances; enough to care about them.
Directed by Dave Parker, Hills Run Red is edited very well. At times, the film switches from the fans' video camera to Dave's camera, and it feels just right. Usually, sometimes, horror films like this doesn't know how to pull this off, but Dave did it just with perfection. Also, this film looks like it has high production value and that is greatly appreciated. The case scenes are tightly stitched together with tension and that is probably the main reason these chase scenes work. Considering this is his first directorial debut, it's going to interesting to see what he comes up with next.
The Hills Run Red was a surprise to me. I really enjoyed this film; it entertained me, it made me cringe, and it made me jump a few times. All of this is hard to find today in horror movies...in original ones, not remakes! Despite the fact, Hills Run Red doesn't really bring anything new, I'd still say go pick this one up. It's here to entertain you, scare you, and make you cringe. It succeeded.
