I'd let some food from the freezer get thawed and stay outside the refrigerator too long. I no longer trusted it to be safe for my husband and I. I offered this fully cooked sausage and potatoes to our three dachshunds. Share the wealth is my philosophy. It isn't their fault the dachshunds were born all thumbs, unable to enunciate words. They still should be able to enjoy something besides mundane kibble day after day.
That was Tuesday. Come Thursday, Hilde was not herself whatsoever. She made it clear, around the house, that she wasn't feeling good. Messes to be cleaned up. Her head was hung low. She was sicker than a ... well, you get the idea. On the way to the vet, she plastered herself against me, wanting me to know just how ill she was. I was hoping she'd make it.
I admitted to the vet what I thought caused the problem. She kept her overnight and gave me the diagnosis the following day of pancreatitis. That is caused when either a canine, or a human ingests too much fat. It is similar to a gallbladder attack, as I understand it, but I don't practice medicine. It is common during the holidays, sharing all the high fat treats. No wonder Hilde was hurting so bad. Once diagnosed with pancreatitis, it may recur at a later time.
The vet said she didn't want her to eat ANYTHING except for the Hills Science Prescription Canine Diet w/d. Although the title is somewhat cryptic, I believe the w/d is a weight reducing formula. Doc said she wanted her to have it because it would pass right through her stomach and not sit there, giving her problems. It was also low fat, aiding in her passing it through her digestive tract quickly.
This formula is small kibble, about the size of a pea or bean. It is a medium brown color. Did the girls like it? Well, it just kinda sat in their bowl the first day or two, until they realized they'd better eat it or starve. With your vet's permission, you can mix it with their regular food over the period of several days. Our three dachshunds finished the 10 lb bag in about 10 days. Probably because of the lack of fat, the bag felt lighter than a bag of commercial kibble. I must admit, Hilde, who carries extra weight because she takes steroids, lost about a pound during this time. Was it her illness, the food, or a combination of both? There are 243 kcals/8 oz measuring cup, reduced magnesium, phosphorus, and sodium.
