Himalayan Institute Neti Pot™ – How does it work?
Written: Apr 03 '08
Pros:Helps with sinus problems and gives you clear breathing ahead.
Cons:Hard to adjust to initially, but it gets easier.
The Bottom Line: Helps keeps your sinus passages moist, washes away pollen and other irritants!
Some might have heard of this product and some may not. I have seen tons of videos for this product and how to use it correctly on the famous video sharing website. If you want to see how its used, you can definitely stop by, type in Neti Pot and you will have 100s of hits. But, I am here to share my account with you and hopefully help some make a purchasing decision.
I chose this particular Neti Pot for a couple of reasons. One, was it is ceramic, washable and is made of lead free ceramic that has food-grade glaze on it. The Himalayan Institutes website states that they introduced this particular product back in 1972. Its been around a long time. Some Oprah fans have repeatedly heard about this product as well. I had the misfortune of wanting to purchase this shortly after Oprah apparently had a show about it and every store in my area was out of this, believe it or not.
The Product
As previously mentioned, this is a ceramic pot. The best way to describe if for someone that might not know about them is to either look at the picture above, or in case that is bad, imagine a small house plant watering can that is short with a fairly long spout to get the water into the plant. That is a very basic way to describe it.
This is something that you use to put in roughly 8 ounces of warm water and mix in about a Ľ of a teaspoon of non-iodized salt, or medicinal salt. You have to make sure the salt is all dissolved into the water before you start using the Neti Pot. When it is ready, you will tilt your head slightly forward and sideways, acting like (if you have dogs) a puppy that is quizzically wondering just what you are up to!
You will take the pot, place it gently into your nasal passage and tilt the pot upwards to allow the salt water to pour through your nasal cavity and exit through the other nostril pointing down towards a sink. The pot is designed to let the water flow slowly so as to not rush you and give you a feeling of being drowned or worse, feel like you are being water boarded.
The purpose the salt water rinse it to help moisturize your nasal passages and help the mucus be removed gently while leaving your sinus passages clearer and remove dust, pollen and other irritants. They say that you can use this to help with colds, sinus infections, improve your general breathing to get a more natural, open airway. But, mostly when people talk about the Neti Pot, its due to sinus issues that they have been fighting for a long time.
With me, I have had problems since the early 1990s. In 1996, I had a sinus surgery to straight my deviated septum and they cut back the turbinates in my sinus cavity to allow for better drainage. Well, it seemed to work, briefly. I still had major, migraine-like headaches repeatedly through the years. I would routinely also get sinus infections regularly. I would no more than finish a dose of antibiotics and about 2 3 weeks late, almost like clockwork, the beginning stages would start back up. I have vowed that I will NEVER, EVER have sinus surgery again.
But, I was getting more and more miserable over the years dealing with recurrent sinus infections, headaches, and generally not being able to breathe very well. So, my mother who apparently watches Oprah religiously, kept telling me to get this, try this, do this, asap. She kept saying people that have been on the show swear by the Neti Pot and they wished they would have started earlier, etc.
So, I broke down and bought one. Fortunately, if you purchase it, it is not extremely expensive brand new. If you shop around you can find them for about $15. Some places will charge upwards of $20. The package normally comes with the Neti Pot and a small package or two of the non-iodized, medicinal quality salt to use. You can always purchase more either online or even from local stores as long as you make sure it is non-iodized salt!
Overall Impressions
I have been using this for about 3 months now. I am happy to report that I havent had a sinus infection at this point. It is difficult to adjust to doing this. You are not used to putting things in your nose, especially water solution. You do need to get into a routine and do it daily. You also need to figure out the appropriate way to put the pot in your nose, tilt your head correctly, keep your mouth partly open and allow the procedure to work.
It is a bit difficult the first couple of times, and I have found a few difficult times since. But, its getting easier, and since its helping, I dont mind doing it. The salt is not very expensive either. You can purchase the medicinal grade online, in whole foods or natural food stores or even a regular grocery store. Always be sure to look for non-iodized salt!
I will continue on this trek to keep my sinuses feeling the best they have in a very long time. I am happy that I purchased the Neti Pot because of the shape of the spout, the curve makes it comfortable to use (or at least as comfortable as you can expect) and the pot is just perfectly sized for the 8 ounces that you need to put through your sinus cavity. As long as it keeps me feeling good, keeps me off antibiotics, I am a happy girl.
Some people might use a saline spray. You would think those sprays work well. But, from my experience, they really did not cut it the way the Neti Pot has (for me). This has been a very nice experience. I am not an expert nor am I a doctor. But, personal experience has proven to me that this is a form of Ayurvedic medicine works. Being that you can find the Neti Pot for $15 or so, it might be worth a try.
~Thanks for spending time with me today!~
