Chowhounds, this is the place for you! If you're not into "haute cuisine" and you're not familiar with the term "pan-asian" or "asian-fusion", you've found a gem in the International District at Hing Loon Restaurant.
It's not pretentious, it's not spendy and it's not glamorous, but it's a place to eat and the eating is good. I'm a Chinese by race and I love this place and me and my non-asian wife and "halfie" children love this place. It has everything from your standard fare of chicken chow mein to fresh steamed fish (yes, with the head still on it and not deboned). We love the steamed fish, the cod and tofu hot pot, the fish congee (really authentic peasant chinese stuff) and dry-fried beef chow fun.
The sauces are flavorful and not heavy and sometimes the cooks have bad days, but for the most part, everything is hearty and delicious. If you like seafood, this is a good place to get it fresh and plentiful (such as the calimari and clams with black bean sauce), but things like the deep fried chicken are just okay. Just as the rest of the restaurant, everything is purposeful, but not elegant.
Hing Loon's menu is quite extensive and it's serving are reasonably generous, but the prices are low. Anyone expecting great table manners from the wait staff or even clean restrooms is asking for a surprise, but every time I leave this place, my tummy is full and happy and my wallet isn't all that much lighter.
