| farmerea's Full Review: Hitachi Roofing Nailer NV45AB |
I believe that the Hitachi NV45AB is the BEST roofing nailer on the market. Pneumatic nailers are truly a category in which you get what you pay for. I have either owned or used both the Bostich and the Porter Cable roofing nailers, and while both are decent tools, neither of them can begin to compare with this one for rugged dependability.
I purchased this nailer out of frustration with one of the above models. With that nailer I had a minimum of one jam per coil of nails. I have not yet experienced a jam with the Hitachi nailer. That's right, not even one!!! A minor annoyance is that very often the last nail in a coil will fall out of the gun, but it falls clear and does not cause a problem (except maybe for someone's tire).
Other nailers I have used were quite fussy about their diet. In other words, they would work well only with one brand of nails. I have fed many different brands, including some really cheap generics, through the Hitachi with consistently excellent results. My nailer has NEVER jammed!!
The only glitch I have found is that this gun is slightly more difficult to load than some of the other brands. The bottom opening trap door requires inverting the gun in some way and I have not yet discovered an easy way to accomplish that task while on the roof. Starting a new coil into the feeding mechanism is also just a bit more difficult than with some other brands but this is, at worst, a minor inconvenience. The dependability of the tool more than offsets the slight difficulty with loading.
My experience has been that this nailer will give me excellent performance, but it does require that I stay on top of routine maintenance chores. I have used pneumatic tools that were more forgiving of lapses in maintenance. Again, this is not a problem, a couple of drops of oil every morning and a daily brush cleaning keep the gun working flawlessly. I am probably not the only guy who could benefit from a better tool maintenance program.
While the price might put this out of the reach of the hobbyist, the Hitachi NV45AB is the best choice for the professional or anyone who can afford it.
I recommend it highly.
