| babypod's Full Review: Hollywood 48 Hour Miracle Diet |
First, let me say that I have not tried this product, but since I am an RD with a lot of knowledge of the human metabolic process, I feel I can write about this product. That is my disclaimer right now. I saw this product in the past and just read a review from a very highly trusted person and I feel I must write this epinion.
First of all, for all those out there who what to lose weight fast, I would like to say this: there are only three ways I can think of to lose 10 pounds in two days. They are as follows:
1. Have a baby. This is a quick and relatively healthy way to lose weight. In fact, you usually lose more like 20 pounds in two days.
2. Have a part amputated or removed. This would be if you had liposuction or had to have a limb or a great number of organs removed.
3. You lose 10# of pure water weight. This is how this diet works.
I want to explain something to everyone out there. Each pound of fat that you have on your body is equal to 3500 Calories (also known as kilocalories). To anyone who has counted calories you know how much food this is. For example, below is the amount of food you would need to eat to even consume that many Calories:
Two Eggs
Two Pieces of toast with margarine
Eight ounces of Orange Juice
Eight ounces of 2% Milk
Quarter Pounder with cheese
French fries (medium)
Regular Soda
Pepperoni personal pan pizza
Regular Soda
One cup of vanilla Ice Cream
Five ounces of Doritos
Above is 3454 Calories. I did choose high calorie foods, thus if you wouldn't eat food this high in calories you would have to eat a LOT more food than this.
This diet pretty much works the same as any starvation diet would work. It works by making you consume very little sodium in a two-day period. By consuming a low sodium diet, all the excess water in your body is washed away. We have a saying, as goes sodium goes water. Thus, if no sodium is going into your system it makes sense that no water is going to stay in your system. There is no sodium to keep it there.
You could get the same results by just consuming water for two days. No other drinks of foods. You would lose 10 pounds of weight. You would not lose 10 pounds of fat. In order to lose 10 pounds of fat you would have to starve while burning off 35,000 Calories in a two-day period.
This is a lot of Calories. In order to expend this many calories you would have to do ALL of the following exercises in two days:
8 hours of racquetball
8 hours of running 10-minute miles
8 hours of cross country skiing
8 hours of mountain biking
8 hours of swimming
8 hours of aerobics
AND 8 hours of dancing.
This right here is 56 hours. There are not 56 hours in two days!! Plus, these are the most calorie expending exercises I could think of. Thus, it would be impossible to burn off this much fat in two days!
As for this product working some type of "miracle" and causing you to somehow shed the fat, think of what a Calorie is. A Calorie as we know it is the same as a kilocalorie. It is actually 1000 calories (the capital "C" in what we know as a Calorie denotes the difference between it and a calorie.) A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise one gram of water from 14.5 degrees Celsius to 15.5 degrees Celsius. Thus, a calorie is energy. It is heat energy. A way to think about it is that you get hot when you exercise because you are expending Calories- you are expending heat energy.
The average person needs anywhere from 1500-2000 Calories to maintain a healthy body weight. If you consumed no Calories and continued to exercise to keep your metabolism up, you would lose about 1 pound. If you are really active and had a high metabolism you may lose two pounds of body fat in two days of starving. If this product had something in it that made that extra 32,000 calories burn up by themselves you would literally burn up. Your body would have to expend those calories as heat and, trust me; you would definitely be feeling something bad going on.
Also, if you are a diabetic or prone to hypoglycemic reactions it would be better if you just starved on water for two days. The types of sugars in this product are simple sugars. Thus, your blood sugars would be uncontrollable.
Finally, to all those who do want to lose weight in this way, doing it once a month probably would not hurt you if you are healthy. Keep in mind that it is water weight and it may come back if you consume something high in sodium. Occasional fasting has not been proven to hurt you, and a few studies show that it may help in some respects.
For me, I would never suggest fasting. Maybe it is because I was a restricting bulimic and spent a great many years fasting, but I think it may start a cycle that sends you down the wrong road to disordered eating behaviors. If you are going to fast, don't buy this product. You could just fast on water or juice for two days and lose the same amount of weight. It would be much cheaper that way.
