NOTE:This review was originally written and posted on Epinions several months ago, though in my own stupidity I deleted it mistaking it for another review. I have since re-written most of it and hope you will review it again if you read it previously.
When I came across The Holy Bible on Epinions, and I spent quite a few minutes contemplating whether to write my opinion on it.. religion being a delicate and arguable subject, but obviously I came to the conclusion that it could do me no harm, and I have every right to post my personal feelings and opinion on here. So here it goes.
First off, I will admit I am not well educated when it comes to Christianity and the Bible. All of the information included in this review is what I have interpreted in my life as the truth, and not necessarily the actual facts. I apologize for any mistakes I might have made dealing with the history of The Holy Bible, and ask you to feel free to e-mail me or leave me any comments to correct any errors.
I'll come straight out and say to all of you that I don't believe in the existence of a god or the idea of organized religion. I won't even capitalize his name since his existence is dust to me, and if you are thinking "that's rude and disrespectful", hold that thought, cause once again this is what I personally believe, hence there is no reason for me to follow your convictions. Now as I was saying:
My personal opinion is that The Holy Bible was written(this is fact as far as I know) by several great Christian preachers and such over time who were involved in the early foundations of Christianity, and is for the most part a work of fiction. I do believe that Jesus Christ existed, and was probably a great man who did a lot of good for the people of his time.
Though a question always comes to my mind: what happened to all these miracles that he created? And all of the miracles that took place in the Old Testament? Why did the occurrences of these miracles suddenly stop after his death? Miracles to those extremes(i.e. the parting of the Red Sea) just do not occur in the present day. Sure, things happen all of the time that we cannot explain, but how well do we really know this world and science and such? Someone suddenly is cured of Cancer, and automatically it is labeled as "a work of god". No, it was not caused by any higher force, but by something that we are yet to discover about the human body. The world of science knows nothing. There is so much yet to be discovered and cured and explained. We only know how 20% of the human brain works. We have yet to discover countless things in all types of science. When I was a child, I was constantly told that thunderstorms were caused by god bowling. As corny as it seems, it is another example of how people use religion as an excuse for everything. Why must people blame everything they cannot understand or explain on god? I have not heard of the Red Sea parting in quite awhile. Or a "Virgin Mary" type being miraculously impregnated by Immaculate Conception and giving birth to a new leader. I am sorry, but the ancient world and the present world are not all that far apart; I find it extremely hard to believe that all of these "miraculous events" could occur in the not-so distant past but not in the present day.
Another argument I have is the entire concept of translation. The Holy Bible was first written in Hebrew, then was passed down over time by word of mouth through Monks and such. Have you ever played the telephone game? Where one person makes up a phrase, then it is whispered between people until the end of the line, and has completely changed? It is the same idea. There is no feasible way that The Holy Bible could have been translated from a complicated language like Hebrew to English, passed down through the years by word of mouth, and then ended up not being distorted and changed. This leads me to believe that The Holy Bible is one massive and intricate folk tale. How can a person live their life based on a folk tale? It would interest me greatly to travel back in time and read the original writings of the Bible, simply to see how much the Bible has been distorted.
So basically I am saying The Holy Bible was, in my opinion, based somewhat on fact, such as the existence of Jesus, but mostly just a fictional work of literature used to base Christianity on. And I am not completely trashing The Holy Bible; it is an amazing work of fictional literature, quite possibly the greatest ever written. What I cant understand is why people turn it into an instruction booklet for everyday life. If I took my favorite fictional novel and based my life around everything it says, I would most likely be dead right now. Also, apart from The Holy Bible, there is no physical proof whatsoever that there is a "higher power" among us, giving me no reason to believe in the sort. I also I do not find worship necessary to me as I believe myself to be secure enough to handle my own life and not need to rely on a higher force that I find to be brainwashing and unnecessary.
So why does society and Christianity look down on me for NOT believing in god or what the Bible tells me? It is complete nonsense. I will believe in what I want. And if you are thinking right now that I am going to "burn in hell" for my beliefs, then please, keep on believing. The day Americans get condemned for what they believe in is the day our society will crumble to pieces. So here is a reality check people: stop being insecure and blaming everything that happens to you or around you on "god" and start taking control of your own lives.
So all and all, this is my say on The Holy Bible(and Christianity for that matter):
It was a piece of fictional literature written to give people who are insecure and who cannot control their own lives, that brainwashes innocent people and gives them false hope and beliefs, and gives something to rely on and blame everything that happens in their sad pathetic lives on.
And once again people, take control of your own lives and grasp reality.
Apologies to anyone I may have offended, but the whole concept of organized religion and worshiping a theoretical power and basing your life on it angers me, as I wish people could be more open minded and try to take their lives into their own hands. I know I will receive many angry comments for writing this review though just remember: I did not write this opinion to preach; I wrote this review to express my personal disbelief on a subject I feel strongly against.
