When you call Home to make a reservation, the hostess answers "Hello, it's Home", and it certainly feels like it when you walk in. The warmth beckons you in -- especially during the bitter cold New York nights, and the cozy atmosphere will keep you there as long as you are allowed to stay.
The restaurant is located on one of those small, crooked Greenwich Village streets. The interior is large enough to hold about 12 small tables but small enough to make you feel as if you're sitting in your grandmother's dining room. It's arranged so that you've got your own, comfortable space, but you feel somehow connected to the other people who are dining -- as if you were at a casual extended family reunion.
Home specializes in simple, hearty dishes that have a flair to them -- garlic mashed potatoes, steak with green peppercorn sauce, apple roasted 1-inch think pork chops are just a few samplings on their menu. Their beer and wine selection is short but high quality -- I found a few interesting and rather hard to fine California picks on there.
The service is casual enough to let you relax, but prompt enough so you don't feel neglected. In the summer, they also open up a back patio so you can avoid the heat and enjoy whatever fresh air exists in New York City.
Some of Home's trademark specialties have made it to the store shelves -- for example, you can get their thick and tasty mustard on gourmet shelves around the country.
For simple, hearty fare, there's no place like Home.
